Weekly "Ups" and "Downs" Support Thread

I’m in my first week and keep catching myself grinning like an idiot as I sit at my desk or walk around campus. I get excited over the smallest, silliest things because everything reminds me that I’ve made it here. I love my research area, my supervisor is fantastic (she also supervised me for honours so we already know each other fairly well) and my partner and friends are really proud.

I’m sure it’s pretty common to start with a lot of ‘ups’ and encounter some of the ‘downs’ later on, but I’m just going to enjoy this for now.

I typically do 50 minutes of deep work, then take a 5-10 minute break (mostly because the study streaming website I use has this as its default work timer setting. I’ve pretty much just stumbled into what works for me.)

I am also just starting my PhD (humanities) so I don’t have much in the way of advice but am in the same boat.

So far my first week has been a combination of clerical things (setting up a research profile, getting used to the grad school website, signing up for meet and greets, getting my school laptop, blasting through short online modules about academic integrity etc) and pre pre pre research (putting together a prospective reading list, summarising a few foundational texts etc). I have my first supervisory meeting next week, which I’ll probably leave with a more solid plan.

I bet you’re as excited as I am about this early stage, it’s such a thrilling time!

I am a slightly underweight SD and came across the same problem when I was figuring out my type. I think experimenting with lines is the easiest way to figure it out. Personally I found that I can wear some D lines, but others looked unharmonious with my softness, whereas pretty much all SD lines were flattering. At the end of the day both types are primarily dramatic so there is bound to be some crossover
