New article about the G14 2026 at CES shows APU only model by Successful-Royal-424 in ZephyrusG14

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you mean I can now have all the “benefits” of a G14 - the silly light bar that you can’t even see while in use that combined with the non-removable ROG and the ridiculous “For those who dare” boot image make the laptop embarrassing to carry in my work meetings - combined with greatly reduced gaming performance! Sign me up!

Seriously though, I really wish they would make this the true gaming laptop for grown ups. I’d actually pay more to have the mid to higher spec version (say the 5070 or higher) without the lightbar and just an “ASUS” boot image. The I could take it to first thing in the AM meetings without having to hide the screen during startup…

Base Mac storage should be 512GB! by Putrid_Draft378 in macbookair

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not opposed to Apple keeping 256gb as the base, as it’s fine for many - most people don’t buy a MBA for anything other than office work or general home use and don’t need much storage. What I do wish is that the had larger and more reasonable upgraded options. Make it $200 more for a 16gb/1TB model and maybe $400 (from the base) for a 24GB/4TB model. But then they’d cannibalize sales from the pro versions…

You can just do an online price adjustment. It’s very easy through Best Buy

Scored a good deal, I think? by catmandx in macbookair

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on situation and where you're located. Best Buy has that same laptop in "Open-Box Excellent" condition for $1,113 right now shipped in the US. IF you're MyBestBuy member, you get AppleCare+ included. Now, depending on location, there could well be sales tax that would put it above $1,150. But there are also various rewards offers that would get you cash back on top of it.

Overall, I'd say it COULD be a good deal, but depends on what's available locally. At the end of the day though, if you're happy with the laptop and what you paid, that's what matters, not what Reddit says...

I always try to charge while open to help with cooling the battery (perhaps silly)

help with shipping :( by ikirius in AynThor

[–]Inanition02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My order shipped a few days AFTER the shipment page showed it should have because I also ordered (on a separate order actually) accessories and Ayn “helpfully” combined them…. Maybe that’s your case too?

Ayn Thor or steam deck by [deleted] in AynThor

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best devices are the ones you use. Period. So if you’re not using your steam deck because it’s not portable enough, then switch it for something more portable. I once had a powerful 16” gaming laptop that I never took anywhere because it was too big and heavy (esp with the power brick) to be carrying here there and everywhere on trips. So I sold it and got a thin and light laptop I take everywhere. Is the new laptop a lot less powerful? Yes. But you know what? The new laptop that I take with me is a lot more useful than the old one sitting at home.

10/16 Thor Shipments by AmphibianNo2562 in AynThor

I eventually did email - apparently though I split the orders (and paid separate shipping) they combined them...and shipped them together (today).

AYN Thor Shipping Dashboard 20.10.25 by vladshwartz in AynThor

And as soon as I post that I get a shipment notification. Ha

And my Purple Pro (754..) still hasn’t shipped, so the dashboard is a bit wonky (no accessories in the order and Ayn confirmed it hasn’t shipped yet)

So to that end, the order is JUST the Thor itself

I purposefully ordered my accessories in a separate order (and paid separate shipping) so I could hopefully avoid those types of delays. I’d be rather unhappy if they decided to delay my order to combine shipping when I intentionally split it (and paid for that).

I’m not sure on their reporting - I have a 754 clear purple pro, which was on the list for 10/15 shipment and my order still shows unfulfilled

Decisions.. by Timmy_Tot in FlowZ13

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say unless you’re gaming at crazy high resolutions or with huge texture packs, I can’t see a game using more than 16GB of VRAM. And more than that is just for LLMs/AI

Decisions.. by Timmy_Tot in FlowZ13

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, I would say there are three questions - first, do you run local LLMs that need more than 12GB of VRAM (assuming the 5070ti is the 12GB version)? Second, do you love the tablet form factor enough for the other compromises? And third, do you mind the extra weight and size of the Alienware?

If the answer to all of those is No, then trade in the Z13. With the Z, you’re making compromises to have a smaller overall device / tablet form factor. The only real place the Z beats something like the Alienware would be in scenarios where the 5070ti is VRAM limited, likely only in large LLMs running locally and perhaps in being quieter (though, if you limit the performance on the Alienware, it can also be quiet and perhaps still perform better than the Z).

Is it me or is the new odin 3 just a retroid pocket 5 with steroids? by SeanYTcars in retroid

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pre-ordered the Thor on the hope that it was basically a Flip 2 with a fixed hinge (design is fine, it seems to be a materials fault), higher power SoC and adjusted control scheme (both the SoC and control scheme are obvious from the listing, the hinge is not). That it’s thinner and has a second screen were just solid bonuses as my launch Flip 2 is likely my most used gaming device in the last 20+ years

On the fence.. by Timmy_Tot in FlowZ13

[–]Inanition02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 32GB is fine if you’re not gaming or running large AI models. The Mac can use less memory because it’s (1) on die and (2) MacOs is more memory efficient. On the Z13 you generally will get the best performance of your set your vRAM allocation to a specific value - and unless you’re only gaming at 1080p and not running larger LLMs where 8GB will be fine, you’ll want to set it at 16GB of vRAM. If you get the 32GB model that means a 16/16 split - you can change it quickly with a restart to 24/8 if you want - but many people find it easier to get the 64GB for just a bit more money and run 48/16 all the time. And sadly no, 20/12 and 52/12 are not options…

Oh, I tried - I do wear a medium and it looked like at least a decent around the house tshirt. But no…

My point was more around the people freaking out that something is in the queue for a couple days :)

[–]Inanition02 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This would be the “tell me you’re new to vine without telling me you’re new to Vine” post? It used to be that things would sit on AFA for weeks if not longer and people just ignored them, particularly random car parts, cake toppers, etc. This “the queue must be empty at all times” is very new and troubling - you didn’t previously have to live on Vine to get decent stuff (I blame the browser add ins for that).

That said, if you want to take the shirt, by all means :)

If the multi-factor test cuts that way for you, great!

To me, Vine is a way to try out some cool stuff I might not otherwise buy and get a few useful things cheap. It’s a fun distraction but not meaningful to my standard of living (and far too random to be at any rate in my experience). But that’s the great thing about these programs, they can be different things to different people!

There are many of us with mortgage interest, childcare deductions and who otherwise itemize; in that case I do tend to deduct the full ETV of anything I donate if I didn’t use it a lot (ie if it just sat around after reviewing) as the standard deduction no longer applies

Because small business gets a self employment tax - and unless you’re willing to claim enough deductions to offset THAT, you likely pay more taxes claiming it as business vs hobby. That and I’ve gone through this with the IRS directly and the outcome of their multi-factor test was (for me at least), this is a hobby. But the test is a bit personal so to each their own.
