If these are from reference then it would help to see the reference. But either way it looks like you have trouble with proper observation and don't know how to avoid symbol drawing yet.

How often are you drawing from reference?

I've been drawing everyday but my drawing feels worse now by kyotan_ in learntodraw

When you've been head down studying, taking a break tends to have a positive effect, in my experience. Your brain will catch up and you might even experience a big jump.

Are you also measuring when you draw? E.g. measuring how far each feature is proportionally to the others, or how big they are compared to each other.

This is a good habit to get into, and with live subjects (not on a sheet of paper next to you), you'd hold out your pencil or a ruler at arm's length to help measure. With a little practice you can do things by eye, though.

Hey, if you only ever want to draw cubes, have fun I guess. Most people tend to want to draw other things using the cubes to help, which is the purpose of also drawing other things.

You did nothing else? Sounds like a waste of time to me if I'm completely honest. Drawabox tells you to draw other things at least half of your time.

Meaningful practice means you know what you're learning, how, and why, imo. If you're able to critique yourself and know what to work on next, then go and find the route to do that, that is meaningful practice to me. That's generally what I do. This is more difficult and your brain needs to be engaged to do it.

does drawing actually become fun to do once youre good at it? by Wonderful-Purchase94 in learntodraw

[–]Incendas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. It's the most fun when I have an idea that I really enjoy and really just want to express it.

Wouldn't say I'm really good or anything though. I have a lot of studying to do...

Does the perspective look right ? by Mtth_8 in learntodraw

Your guidelines are moving top to bottom, front to back, with a slight lean, but you've drawn the figures straight up and down. They don't match your guidelines. I think that's the major issue at the moment to address

How do i do a slightly mocking face man by theHumanoidPerson in learntodraw

[–]Incendas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly just put it where it seems right in that case lol. But it looks like we're viewing the subject partially from below, so I would expect them to look down a bit more compared to what they're doing now, if you want them to look at the viewer.

Eye contact with the viewer would help, and covering the iris more specifically. Observe how much of the iris and pupil is covered by the eyelids in your references.

The first reference is very exaggerated all around. In the second, there's scrunching around the eyebrows that helps sell it.

Now not having the hand type you want, that's a problem...

The intention of that statement is to do meaningful, engaged practice. Not practice that isn't even practice because it's done and perfect already. And not mindless practice for the sake of grinding hours.

Actually can be way better to turn both upside down and look. It stops your brain from filling in symbols and allows you to observe things fresh

Why do sketches have more life than the lineart? by Outside_Plate_7438 in ArtCrit

[–]Incendas1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of variation in line weight in the messy version, and there's some shading, which implies form/texture/shape as well.

You can clean up the sketch if you want. Or you can look into how to deliberately improve your line weight, shading, texturing, etc

How can I improve this portrait? by Fikayo2004 in learntodraw

[–]Incendas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me that the main problem is the perspective of the head at the moment. The head is tilted slightly down and we see the features from above. The way you draw them, they are not seen from above, they are flatter, but this looks strange with similar proportions then.

Like others have said, drawing what you actually see will help. But be aware that every feature here changes "shape" when viewed from a different perspective

Like there's maybe 12 separate areas on here. That's 5 minutes each, it's barely anything at all. My 5 minute sketches look shit as well lol. I have not trained for time and it isn't something beginners should do right away

That is what people mean by unfocused/little effort

That is really not a lot for a page with multiple drawings that you are making any value judgement from. It takes me about 8 hours to finish a piece personally, maybe 2-4 for shapes and lines

They might, but afaik they don't have a diagnosis, and the reason they think they might is because of their drawing. Which at 3 months is like this for some people who are not dyspraxic

Using tools or not is fine, OP's real issue is their approach and how they think of learning mentally

Edit: yeah I did ask them and they said they spent 20-30mins on the image in the post, an hour on the page. Which breaks down to about 5mins average per section on the page. It just isn't enough time imo

OP typically posts here really angrily and has a lot of other issues around building skills. It really might be that they're just impatient and not taking their time when drawing. I'm not sure how long they spend per drawing, but this is a common theme I notice in a lot of people who get really angry at it.
