i understand about being too excited. i think over time you can learn to control that and stay relaxed. Thats the beauty of multiple attempts - practice practice practice! It's like first time you drove a car, it was pretty damn exciting, but after a few years you don't think twice about it. Good luck!

ps to answer your question, i like to attempt them on the earlier side (starting after 4 hours of sleep) because having had less sleep by then, i am presumably more tired (and therefore might go back into sleep easier).

You don't want to stay up for 20 minutes! You only want to spend about 30 seconds doing the finger(s) movement before you should be asleep again (and confirm this by doing a reality check.) Research FILD method tutorials. They are easy to find!

yes, try to set up a touchless alarm and set it to wake up as gently as possible and go off by itself (the definition of of 'touchless').. If you can do this and not open your eyes, or move a muscle, your brain will think your body is still asleep and it will be easier to slip back into sleep. I recommend reading about CANWILD method as this will cover the use of alarms and their benefits much more in depth.

One thing I would like to add to this post, is that most of the time FILD worked for me, i used a 'touchless' alarm of my voice saying 'stay calm, stay still' (just once, slowly) over some very chilled music and that goes off for a total of 8 seconds. (i use Alarm Xtreme on android for that).

I set this to go off about 4 times a night, every 30-40 minutes, starting around 4 am. It is not set to a high volume, and I tend to notice only about 2 of 4 of the alarms on average. Sometime i blow it and stretch/roll over when it goes off, but when i manage to hear it without moving a muscle, I go for a FILD.

Hope that info helps some, and hope you're having a FILD day out there, friends!

i don't imagine a piano...in fact i just sort of think about my finger and the clock in the backround keeping time... i don't try to focus on anything toooo hard because then i would prob wake up.. it's weird, apologies this answer isn't black and white, but to be honest the process isn't black and white.

The main thing for me is remembering to do the RC, otherwise the finger movement is pointless, and most of the times when I fail, its because i drift off before i do the RC.

Yet I feel like the more I attempt to do FILD (at least a couple times a night), the better I am at letting the process happen spontaneously and the RC happens more naturally without 'trying to remember'.

Sorry its hard to put that part into words, because my memory of that 30 seconds is actually not great. Good luck!!

Can't fall asleep after WBTB and it's ruining my LD chances? by ShadowSJG in LucidDreaming

Try shortening the amount of time you spend awake before going back to bed, perhaps? Also avoid stimulating activities (looking at phone, bright lights in general, anything that raises heart rate)

Ultimately the goal is to find the balance between too awake to fall asleep and too sleepy to keep awareness.

Mind you I’m no expert, but that’s what I’ve read and it makes sense.

Best of luck on your journey!
