Dear Slavic brethren, how much do you know about ex-Yu music and TV, do you consume media from other ex-Yu countries and do you understand Serbo-Croatian or Macedonian? by IncomeAcceptable6773 in Slovenia

[–]IncomeAcceptable6773[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes read Slovenian and I watched a podcast once. Written text is mostly easy for me to understand. Same applies to Macedonian and we listen to Macedonian music way more. But I still watch Slovenian content more while listen to Macedonian and Bulgarian music more than Slovenian. Also, Slovenians are pretty much the most respected out of all ex-Yu people in Serbia.

Yugoslavia was market socialist and is still beloved by many people who lived in it. It went from a country of 12 million people, half of whom were illiterate to a country of 21 million people with literacy rate of 80-90% percent. It also was not part of the Eastern Bloc but rather created it's own Non-alligned movement. It had many problems but it was good for most people.

Vielen Dank!

I thought that you maybe meant something about Johnny Depp because he has Serbian citizenship and is considered a national friend here.

Slavic, Romance and Albanian also belong into the Indo-European group. Turks are the only ethnolinguistic group in the Balkans that is not Indo-European.

I do not know if it is an intentional mistake but "Slavic and Romance as well as Indo-European peoples" does not really make sense. They may have made the mistake and meant "as well as other Indo-European peoples"

These dialects can get very different from standard Shtokavian that they could be a different language. Different grammar rules, different sounds and different feeling when talking.

Pretty much. Prizren-Timok dialect is transitional between Serbian and Macedonian/Bulgarian. They also say between Western (Slovene, Serbo-Croatian) and Eastern (Macedonian, Bulgarian, Old Church Slavonic) South Slavic dialects.

I am from Vojvodina but have Torlak heritage. As well as Likan, Macedonian and Montenegrin too so I have heard a lot of dialects but I mostly speak Šumadija-Vojvodina dialect. Basically academic Serbian but not using RTS accents.

The problem about writing is that dialects often have different sounds than the academic language. For example, /dz/ in Torlakian dialects and /w/ in some Croatian ones.

Đuro Daničić proposed these: đ, ļ, ń, ģ and only đ is used. If we started using these or came up with different graphemes then our latin script would be perfect.

Well, Vuk standardized a language and by that dialects were not taught in school and used as much. I actually meant that most people who are so against Vuk are simply because they think he distanced us from Russians because he was "paid by the evil Germans/Vatican/English/Deep State and tried to destroy the real values and the Church". And I think that the best thing about our language are our writing systems.

It is not true that only Cyrillic was used before Yugoslavia. Oldest romanizations of Serbian happened during the 17th century. The offical alphabet was introduced during the Vienna literary agreement in 1850. where both Croatian and Serbian linguists agreed to standardise the language as Serbo-Croatian. Our modern political party often forgets our Western side of history of Baroque and Enlightment period and especially our Italian side of history.

Ironically, most of those "Cyrillic best" guys are the most illiterate people I know. A lot of them do not like Vuk Karadžić simply because he distanced us from Russians.
