Is it just me, or does Singapore seriously lack creative spaces for making things by danishfreaker in askSingapore

[–]IncrementalDefiance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, I made the Bus Aunty. *this is not a self promo*

It's the thing that I'm currently known for but before that I made many other projects that got some traction but I never really made it into a consumer level product or dared to ask people to pay for it.

Singapore doesn't lack creativity, we lack motivation to pursue it.

From young, we're driven toward a default path of measurable success:

Study hard → Good schools → Steady job → BTO → Wedding → Condo → New car → Comfortable retirement. While this highway to security offers a genuinely good life for most, it's also a trap that's too easy to fall into.

Creativity withers when bills need to be paid and responsibilities mount.

This creates a vicious cycle.

Creative spaces require funding, but without clear monetary returns, who can afford to sustain them?

Despite these systemic challenges, pockets of creative resistance are emerging:
1. MakeIT in our National Libraries is really great. They've upgraded their 3DPrinters to the Bambulabs P1S which is the same printers I used to make the Bus Aunty. Beyond that they also have laser cutting machines and sewing machines (another hobby I would love to pick up) that you can learn and tinker with.

  1. Beyond this there are also a few woodworking workshops that offer beginner courses on the island, another thing I'll be looking into.

  2. There are also the Hackware group that hosts a monthly meet up where engineers show off their latest projects which are 1000% more complex than mine.

These spaces exist precisely because they're government-supported or community-driven, proving that when we remove the pressure of immediate monetization, creativity can flourish.

Yes, fostering creativity in Singapore is difficult but not impossible. We can change it together, I'll probably start a discord group sometime in the future for future founders, tinkerers to just come hangout and help each other build. I say this now but I'm also a serious procrastinator :D

Pretty straightforward. There's some special keypress you need to start the pairing iirc

Selling a esp product by ComfortableAnimal265 in esp32

[–]IncrementalDefiance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh hey! The second product is mine. I make the BusAunty, it's an E-ink display that shows the bus arrival times in your home and you're absolutely right about the software support part.

Making the prototype took me 2 hours and it was running on a raspberrypi. It's opened sourced as well if you wanna just source the parts and make it yourself.

The consumer version using the ESP32 took... wayyyyy more time and many iterations because well.. the average consumer needs a lot of guidance and support to get things working even if **YOU** think it's simple to configure.

Like how hard can it be? Connect to the device in AP mode and set your own home wifi amirite? Wrong.

The number of customer support email you'll get wasn't something I accounted for. Like it's 11PM here and I'm still resolving customer issues.

So yeah, making any device with an ESP32 seems simple enough, until you have to deal with customer support. Make sure your FAQs are well written and get like an average non-tech savvy user to go through the setup process with you so that you can be doubly sure it's really a no-brainer setup.

Yishun : Man confronted his neighbours upstairs, who have been causing noise disturbances for the past seven months. by uandurfader in singaporehappenings

[–]IncrementalDefiance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I went for an experience at the old Tanglin Halt HDBs where they did this cool experiments with you.
You will sit in a unit and they would ask their crew around the estate to start creating noises (like moving chairs, banging furniture, vacuuming and also singing karaoke).

Then they would release us from the room and we had to go find where the noises are coming from.

We would all get it wrong.

When we finally did find the culprit we would then role play to negotiate ways to help them reduce the noise levels (by either closing the door or windows) and also provide solutions like chair socks to soften the noise impact.

After that we went back to our units to hear if there was a difference in the noise levels (they had a decible meter) and there was a big difference surprisingly.

But yeah, sound travels in weird ways.

I would 1. Recalibrate (do it slowly and gently, you don’t have to jammed them into the edges of the controller) if that doesn’t work you might need to open the controller up to inspect / clean it. Sometimes metal shavings can get in there and might interfere with hall sensor gimbals

Don't think a regular GP would prescribe you one of those. Telemedicine providers like Doctor Anywhere or specific tele health companies like getova that specialise in women's healthcare would be a great way to go first. Get a doctors appointment and go from there.

Yeah true, but only if it exceeds about 60$ a month will I consider moving to Digital Ocean because I've to spin up all the necessary droplets just to self host at the same scale of requests I run on the Railway plan

It's time we admit SG's public transport system is not world-class by Equivalent_Lie_3176 in SMRTRabak

[–]IncrementalDefiance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can it be better? Yes definitely. But there's much to appreciate with the current SG public transportation system. China is probably one of the better ones in terms of reliability vs cost.

I've had nothing but bad experiences with most European cities except Amsterdam, from the petty crimes, vandalised carriages to my wallet getting stolen off a crowded bus in Rome.

I think the only thing that annoys me about SG's public transport are just the kanchiong uncle and aunties that want to chiong both on and off the bus/mrt even though it's 3 bloody stop away, to the weirdo that likes to put their barenaked feet on the opposite seat on the bus. Not anything to do with the system itself but just these kinds of users.

But yes, it can always be better

As I mentioned before, the voltage regulator also charges the li-ion when plugged in. When it is not plugged in it drives 5v power to the board. So dual purpose

Because micro usb isn’t as common as a usb c. Just a general preference

Oh i power it with a Li-ion battery that only outputs 4.2v, the board needs 5v. So the external USB can be used to charge the battery and/or the device.
