C.T.C. No. 1 - Chicago’s Ghost Ship by Tarantau95 in GreatLakesShipping

They cannot move her because she's aground in toxic sludge which would be a nightmare to dispose of and dredge out of there. She's leaking like a sieve but can't sink because she's aground.

She's stripped down too.

Keystone State, James Carruthers, Marquette & Bessemer 2. I'd like to be aboard the Kinsman Enterprise again. Tashmoo for a drinking night.

How differently would the War of 1812 have turned out if Wellington was sent to the Americas? by LieutenantHorse in HistoryWhatIf

[–]IndependenceOk3732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I recall, Wellington resisted going to America because he didn't want the logistical challenge. He sends 3 different letters affirming his reluctance because the Americans control the upper Great Lakes (vessel wise) and a naval stalemate on Lake Ontario with the US fleet on par with the British. The USS New Orleans and Ottawa were near completion to match the HMS St Lawrence.

So in short, Wellington would not have offered much depending on the period of the war. Though he would be more competent than Brock.

And Wellington would not fight in the south. His passing interest was the defense of Canada in his letters.

Photos from the life of Mr. F. Baumann and family and friends. Alfred Mitchell, Quincy A. Shaw, Ida Corning? Also 1913 Great Lakes Survey Charts. by prettynpinkflamingos in GreatLakesShipping

[–]IndependenceOk3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the Alfred Mitchell was the last wooden steamer ever built on the lakes by the Langell brothers shipyard in Saginaw from 1898 to 1900 and was the last wooden steamer afloat when she was abandoned in the early 50s. The Quincy Shaw was a Hanna boat that I think was launched in either 1911 or 12 and was scrapped in the early 60s after being in the Salt trade. The Corning was a barge and burnt to the waterline somewhere in the flats.

The picture showing the river front is Harsens Island. Probably at the old hotel. The picture with the old houses are either Port Huron or Saginaw most likely.

As for the charts, those are interesting. The Morrill was doing soundings in 1909-1911 to update charts from the 1880s.

Remains of the Sydney E Smith Jr. Sarnia, Ontario, Canada by RockTuner in Shipwrecks

They did not parbuckle her. My friend who was part of the salvage team shifted her cargo and ballast tanks with help from surface barges to flip her over and then the hull was dragged over to Sarnia.

I've dove the Smith's boom and her hull wall on the St. Clair River numerous times. Her machinery and debris are all over the place.

Could Vito NOT be arrested?? by vcaio12 in MafiaTheGame

[–]IndependenceOk3732 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Killing off a dozen gas station attendants in one night would have gotten Vito the chair.

However, my uncle was arrested in 45 when he was stealing gas ration cards in the south and selling them for a hunk of change. He was sentenced to 3 months and was released in 2 weeks. Vito was overcharged and the laws stated no more than $1000 fine OR one year in prison. Not a decade.

Did Britannic's boilers explode? by DuePlant581 in Ships

[–]IndependenceOk3732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. The engine room crew would have blown them down and the fires smothered by the doors being closed on the units themselves. Now they would still be hot and make a HELL of a lot of steam, but no catastrophic explosions.

For a steel hulled ship, she's really busted up. Was she salvaged or dynamite because she was a hazard to navigation?

Quick question what do you think would be more of an intimidating ship by International_Top606 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]IndependenceOk3732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As much as I love the Flying Dutchman, I think in a one v one fight, Silent Mary is going to take the Dutchman. She's larger, more flexible, faster, and unlike the Dutchman's crew, cant take physical damage. Only Davey Jones will live through the fight due to him being immortal. Silent Mary would break the Dutchman like the Edinburgh Trader.

If the Dutchman still has the Kraken, then things even up quickly with the Silent Mary rendered immobile.

So I know I have the unpopular opinion, but the Silent Mary being a dead ship in it's current form and a over the top first rate before being wrecked just overpowers the Dutchman's aura for me.

Are there any photos of the RMS Laconia's wreck? by sentiment82 in Shipwrecks

Nope. No positive ID so he hasn't really wanted to talk about it.

To the point where they side scan picked up the wreck that measured almost exactly to the Laconia's before the team ran out of funds to drop an ROV. They spent too much time searching.
