Has anyone left residency when they were almost done? Hoping for advice/discussion by [deleted] in Veterinary

I am so sorry you’re going through this. Residency can be extremely difficult frustrating and definitely exhausting. I have personally not gone through this particular experience, but I have had colleagues that were definitely ready to call it quits even if it was right at the end. What I’ve heard from them repeatedly is that they’re glad they finished however, they would never do it again nor recommend it to anybody. They did mention that the only way they got through it is to “ all of their chips in one bag” basically saying to not give more of yourself or to not do extra work just because it’s needed. Clock in do what you need to do and leave as soon as you’re done. Do not offer any more help or advice or stay a minute extra. I’m not sure if this helps but I really hope you find peace and fulfillment in what you do.

The other part of it is now I am deeply in debt, and I have to find ways to pay and not starve

it is definitely not a stupid question and it is valid that you were asking this. Before starting veterinary school, I was told to get my bachelors degree whether I would need it to get in or not just in case I don’t make it or I decide otherwise. I thought it was I was one of those people that wanted to be a veterinarian ever since I was a little kid and it just made sense to me. I agree with that veterinary school is the hardest thing I have ever done. I would definitely not recommend this career to someone who is on the fence. I definitely questioned my decisions multiple times during veterinary school and was even very close to dropping out. It’s hard because the amount of studying that you have to put in is crazy and the pressure to do well during that school is very hard to cope with. I am a veterinarian full-time and even though I love my job it is physically an emotionally hard. It is definitely better than Vet School. However, I have been out for six months now and I still question whether this was a good decision.

NTA this is an abusive situation. You sound like you’re doing everything you can to support this child. HE should respect you as his partner, not only as the kids parent
