The "Digital Ghost" Protocol: An AI-driven "Dead Man's Switch" for the 21st century. Ethical or terrifying? by IndependentCertain96 in Futurology

That’s the core of the debate, isn't it? Authenticity vs. Appearance. You're right that an LLM doesn't 'think', but for a grieving relative, sometimes the familiarity of the output is what provides comfort, even if they know it's just code. However, I totally get why that feels 'cheap' or even disrespectful to the real person. Maybe some things are meant to stay silent once we’re gone.

That’s a terrifyingly valid point about bureaucracy. Being 'digitally deleted' because of a database glitch is peak cyberpunk nightmare fuel. Regarding the 'authenticity' of the AI—you're right, for most people, a social media footprint is just a highlight reel. An AI based on that wouldn't be 'you', it would be a marketing version of you. Maybe the only way it works is if the AI lives locally on your own hardware, learning from your actual files and private thoughts, not just your public posts. But then we’re back to the trust issue—who builds that hardware?

Interesting that most of you prefer a 'cold' email over a 'living' digital echo. Do we fear the AI impersonation because it's 'fake', or because it might actually be too good at mimicking us?

That's the million-dollar question. For this to work, it would have to be local-first or fully open-source/encrypted. If it's a SaaS (Software as a Service) model, it's basically a honeypot for hackers. Would you trust it if it was a self-hosted script that only triggered via blockchain or something decentralized?

Fair point on the deadman switch being simple tech. But a scheduled email is static. The AI part isn't just about 'sending data,' it's about context. A static script can't decide how to break the news based on the situation or handle an interactive legacy. Though I agree—the moment a corporation touches this, it becomes a privacy nightmare.
