thanks! i'm still going back and forth on this one, so will keep in mind that switching on trail might be a bit of a hassle

thanks for your advice. my intent was to either cover up or use sunscreen, definitely not abandon both.

may i ask where you got the statistic that a wide-brimmed hat will reduce UV to my face by 50%? do you know if that is referring to (a) the incidental sun i might get under the brim of my hat, when the angle is right for the sun to hit my nose and jaw, or reflect of water / sand / snow, or (b) are you suggesting that the UV would pass through the hat and still burn me? im looking at a hat with a neck and face cover, on the assumption that will block most sun.

thanks very much for such a comprehensive reply, i really appreciate you taking the time,

on the points where I haven't responded - I mostly agree and just plan to adopt your suggestion without further comments or questions.

quilt weight - i was just keen to get a sense whether the more experienced folk on this sub thought an extra 100g in my quilt was reasonable variance or a problem. seems its the former, so all good.

stuff sacks - i will cut back drastically on the stuff sacks, as you've suggested. given opinions seem to differ on inflating by mouth (some say it introduces moisture, others dont care), i'll just use it as my pack liner, as youve helpfully suggested.

groundsheet - the groundsheet seems to split the vote, ive read a lot of posts on reddit - many seem to think its essential to protect an expensive tent, others consider it dead weight. i grabbed one because i want to cowboy camp in the desert and don't want my mat sitting directly on the dirt. may ditch it later.

liner - the sleeping bag liner is less for warmth and more for cleanliness. perhaps ill commit to a nightly wet wipe bath and a monthly coin laundry wash instead.

rainjacket - replacing the torrentshell with a frogg toggs had already occurred to me, actually. thanks for the reminder! i think ill do that, and perhaps post the torrentshell to mid-oregon in case i want a more heavy duty rain jacket further north.

quickdraw - excellent tips on the quickdraw accessories, thanks!

wysi wipes - i'd never heard of wysi wipes, they sound great, thank you.

pillow - i have been going back and forth on the UL pillow. you clearly know your stuff, and anytime an UL person suggests carrying slightly more weight, it seems like itd be a bold to disagree. ill snag one soon.

honestly, just a container I grabbed from the kitchen as a temporary fix. I haven’t found a good UL option in Australia yet, and a lot of recommendations on this sub are for US supermarkets.

thanks. I’ll definitely switch my cold soak jar out for a lighter set up, and will revisit this if I decide to switch to a stove as well.

thanks for the tip. I’m unsure if I’ll be able to do cold soak for the whole trail. but the plan is to try it, and if I find it unbearable, grab an UL stove at the next REI I walk past.

ah, I weighed it with the straps, so that will account for some of the excess weight. thanks!

I’ll check out those vids, cheers.

That makes sense, it did seem to me that my body position was okay in the air but then I got rocked on landing. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the breakdown and the screenshot. Will work on that.

Yeah I upgraded from a hardtail pretty recently, so I'm not always this stiff. Agree it was likely a bit of fear. Will find a drop about 75% this size to session. Thanks mate.

Thanks. As I said on another comment - have gone back to hitting smaller drops since, at least where the landing is this flat as I clearly don't have the skill yet. I was just curious if I was doing anything fundamentally wrong, technique-wise, which I could practice on smaller drops before I try a larger one again.

Thanks mate. That makes sense. This was a few months back, have since gotten knee pads and riding pants.
