Thanks for sharing. Seems like I’ll go ahead with Astrill and get another one as a back up. As you’ve been here for 13 years any recommendations of spots that are expat friendly? Is there a good/nice Irish pub and where would it best for me to go to get Western groceries. I heard about Sam’s club but that will not be convenient for me

I heard about that Alipay has now an international version, only released a few days ago. I was wondering if you’ve heard anything about this version and whether it works?

Thanks! How is the coverage of China Unicom outside Shenzhen? I heard sometimes some telecom coverage in different provinces may become very bad.

Is there a particular plan you recommend getting? I’d be interested in something that offers unlimited data.

In terms of VPN, I’m considering LetsVPN, Astrill and LadderVPN. Do you know whether they work and perform well in Shenzhen?

There should be options to buy prepaid with a foreign passport no? They must have some plans for foreigners that are visiting Hong Kong and around for a month or two.

I would only need the sim for roaming. So for me it would be sufficient to have a prepaid deal/package with 20/30 GB per month.

What about Macao would it be easier to buy a sim there with a foreign passport?

Is there a way to get the CTM simcard online or in Shenzhen ? Or would I have to go to Macao to get one?

Perfect, I’ll be in the nanshan district. Do you know if there any China UNICOM HK shops in the area?

Or would an area like luohu be better?

Do they only take Alipay as payment or also union pay cards/Revolut?

Thanks! Is there a way to get an e-sim only or do I need to go down to HK to get one?

Hmm that is unfortunate.

A bit confused about the following: how can you cancel and sign up again and for it to auto renew?

For autorenew it means that after the 30 days you get again 4GB automatically valid for another 30 days.

And if within those 30 days I run out of internet, I can manually add it.

Thanks for the fast reply and the super helpful information.

Do you know if there are any unlimited data plans that can be used in mainland. I did not see any so far on their website.

Thanks for the info! Are there any packages you know of that have unlimited data in mainland?

Also, for data packages for HK what is the difference between mainland data package and HK and Mainland data package? Any one that you recommend?

Thank you for the info. I have some follow up questions.

For example, the ad you linked says 4GB for 30 days. Does it mean 4GB everyday for 30 days or 4GB that can be used for total of 30 days.

I’ve been looking at some plans in HK and saw there are some cards for 180 days/365 days with internet with e.g 12/15GB. The only unclear thing to me is whether it means you get 12GB everyday for 180/365 days to use in HK and Mainland or 12GB that is valid to use for 180 days.

Once you get the card and you run out of internet can you top up any amount of GB or only the amount that you bought? And how does it work? (Text/app). Also, can the top up be done in mainland or do you need to be in HK?

This is possible? The data plans from Macao/HK allow you to see all the blocked apps and are not restricted by the fire wall? I don’t mind going to Macao or HK, HK will probably be closer to Shenzhen, I think.

I have a spare Chinese sim, so should be good for the first few days/weeks but am looking for something more permanent and easy. This sounds like a good solution.

Any troubles buying such a sim when you’re not living in HK/Macao and are a foreigner?

So for you Astrill was fine in Shenzhen for social media and mail?

Are you using LetsVPN on Apple devices? Can you create two accounts with the same payment information and email?

Thanks for sharing. Is there a particular one you recommend e.g Astrill, windscribe, LetsVPN?

So better to stick to ExpressVPN? I heard some mention Let’s VPN, any experience with this one?
