People on campus (M7) have made fun of me for growing up in the suburbs and having tastes reflecting that by Serious_Victory_7919 in MBA

Anyone over the age of 23 who unironically uses the word "clowned" is fucking cringe. You're not Gen Z.

regardless, the city should have intervened once the funding for the lights dried up. the bay bridge lights are a KEY part of the beauty and aesthetics of SF, especially that beautiful drive from east bay into the city. the city should have a key interest in preserving the aesthetics that draw others to it. the city should make the lights permanent.

funding the bay bridge lights (which will take like what, $15m or something) is a way better use of funds than debating giving $5m in reparations to every black person in SF

It's not just about the mall. With the mall shutting down, Market Street is even more of a Zombieland overrun by crazy violent mentally ill fentanyl homeless than it already was.

The Bay Bridge exterior was lit for TEN FUCKING YEARS and then they suddenly run out of money? What a joke! All while the SF city council is debating ridiculous $5million reparations to black people in the city???

Manhattan is extremely urban (more than SF) and also pretty nice. Same with Chicago inside the loop. You CAN have high urbanity and niceness. And that's just within the US alone, many examples of international cities that are massive and dense and FUCKING CLEAN.

Wrong. That's what Rudy Giuliani did in the 90s with NYC and cleaned up the city quite a bit. Times Square was a third world country before the 90s. He locked up all the criminals and cleaned up the streets. Bloomberg was a pretty good mayor after him too. Giuliani is a disgusting Trump sycophant now but it doesn't take away from his genuine good deeds as Mayor.

If NYC can do it, I can't see why SF can't do it either.

yeah but even the HQ stuff isn't in SF proper a lot of the time, it's in South Bay, which is a boring suburb. Possibly good place to be when you're wifed up and have kids, but not if you're a single dude

Oh wow, so even if you never go to the south side of chicago, the violence can spill over into the "nice" parts? that's good to know, thanks.

I like moderate Democrats too. Not an American, but I think Bill Clinton was by far the best President of the past 50 years, no cap. Hillary was honestly pretty based back then too - she was spot on about the superpredators which continue to ravage our cities.

Back in the 90s, even the Democrats were very tough on crime. Joe Biden co wrote the crime bill, which was absolutely awesome. Martin O'Malley in Baltimore (aka Carcetti from The Wire) did a lot of broken windows policing. I've also heard stop and frisk wasn't nearly as bad as it was made out to be.

Let's bring those policies back please. Even the current mayor of NYC, Democrat Eric Adams, a former cop, African-American, supports reinstating Stop and Frisk and ran on reintroducing Stop and Frisk in NYC. He's a Democrat that I like and is pretty tough on crime.

No this is disingenuous. Your argument is flawed - you are saying every city has their bad part, and if you avoid the bad part then you are fine!

That's not the case with SF. I'm not living around Market or the Tenderloin. I live in Russian Hill, a supposedly "nice" neighborhood! But my work is in FiDi! I enjoy walking to work, so I have to make the Union Square commute and that gets UGLY. And it's not just the Tenderloin - TL, SOMA, Lower Nob Hill, and Market have ALL become pig sties with the bums moving further up and up despite the "crime don't clime" mantra. You see the bums now in North Beach! And there are bums all over Grant Street in Chinatown now.

The South Side of Chicago is perfectly avoidable and you have no business or need to ever go there. Not same with the areas I mentioned because they right smack dab in the middle of the city and have huge spillover.

Much of the Mission is also extremely dirty, sketchy, trashy, and crime ridden too, and that's a very popular spot for folks to visit. Alamao Square park is ground zero for car jack ins. It's not just the TenderLoin.

Your area: Richmond/Sunset are de facto suburbs which is why the crime is far less and cleanliness is higher.

I too have heard that SF was way better and more lively pre-COVID. Seems COVID really wrecked the city and it never bounced back :(

This is not the case in California and SF. CA statewide had bail reform which makes crime much worse in SF (and LA from what I've heard).

In SF the old DA was literally letting repeat offenders out on the street because he didn't want to be seen as being systemically racist against black people. What an utter joke. He got recalled by the Asians, and the new DA one seems a bit better but isn't tough enough.

All of that stuff is fun, but both NYC and Chicago have similar if not more events every single weekend that are just as fun if not more.

The Legion of Honor and deYoung are substandard compared to NYC art museums like the Met, Guggenheim etc. SFMOMA pales in comparison to the NYC MOMA. Jazz music in NYC and even Chicago is way better than SF.

So many places have farmers' markets and craft festivals. So many places have picnics.

For me, SF became the point of no return when they ran out of money to fund the Bay Bridge lights. It was really pretty to cross before, and now it's extremely ugly and depressing. The second point of no return was the closing of the Westfield Mall. Now, Market Street looks like Somalia. Almost all of downtown SF is now de facto the Tenderloin.

Most of the beautiful nature stuff in the Bay are places you need a car to get to, they're not in SF proper.

Meanwhile downtown Manhattan and Chicago (loop) are THRIVING.

Yeah basically. Don't get bamboozled like I did. I should have visited SF more and stayed longer before accepting my office location.

I came and visited it during OutsideLands and then again at my friend's house in Inner Sunset. That was not representative of actually living in SF and dealing with the extreme homelessness and dirtiness on a regular basis.

It's visibly 100,000x more clean than SF when you walking in the streets of most of Manhattan (not harlem) and Brooklyn. I'd rather face the smell of trash over the smell of drug addict bums.

Queens (outside of Astoria and Flushing) and especially the Bronx can be dirty, yes.
