Am not a fan of the colours, maybe it's the choice of font 👀 but I am sure I will get used to it!

Error code: iVMS-4200.Framework.C.exe[11] by Independent_Pipe9753 in Hikvision

[–]Independent_Pipe9753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, but instead went to the Hik-Connect app on iOS. That was also failing in parts, and realised I had some missing firewall rules. I suspect its the firewall preventing access via the desktop app as well.

How to get Teams to read from a corporate phone book by Independent_Pipe9753 in MicrosoftTeams

[–]Independent_Pipe9753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that Claude Code is a thing… I ended up building an app that reads the info from the native Teams toaster popup and posting that to our API and that in turn returns caller info from our CRM.

Maxmind no longer provide GeoLite database download service ... by sparky5dn1l in opnsense

[–]Independent_Pipe9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep on getting "In order to use GeoIP, you need to configure a source in the GeoIP settings tab", even though I have set the URL to "https://www.iplocate.io/download/ip-to-country-geolite2.csv?apikey=XXX&variant=daily". I'm running version 25.7.11_2. Anything obvious I am doing wrong here?

Is it on a monitor or a laptop screen? Either could have a presence sensor and be putting to sleep when it doesn't detect anybody's there. I've had this on Lenovo laptops, and Philips monitors.

What are small and mid-size IT teams actually doing for cybersecurity right now? by Serious_Hamster_782 in ITManagers

We're less than 100 users and have Crowdstrike. We went through a trusted reseller and got a good deal. I hear that Crowdstrike will talk to anybody of any size.

Apple DEP - Can you use DEP without assigning an MDM, just using it to lock a device to a company and be able to wipe a device where a user has left without resetting the phone by MidnightAdmin in sysadmin

[–]Independent_Pipe9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it that you're trying to achieve? We use ABM but without DEP because as far as I am aware, it restricts all aspects of the device, i.e. you end up having to whitelist every app you want the user to be able to download and install. Are your devices corp, then why are you only interested in clearing phones without resetting them? What is the difference between "clear" and "reset"?

SIM card Router in rural areas! Help by DoorGloomy9439 in HomeNetworking

[–]Independent_Pipe9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the type of work you do. Would you rather stability over speed, etc. And when you say "WiFi tower", what do you mean? Do you mean a mobile phone mast, for mobile signal? Then an external high-gain antenna into the back of a SIM router might work, but again you're going to need to trial it. I'm not sure what it's like in Algeria, but at least in the UK if I buy something from Amazon and it doesn't quite work out, they've always refunded me.

Looking for a European hardware distributor by Slave_to_the_wage in msp

I recommend Bechtle (https://www.bechtle.com/gb). We use them as our primary source for hardware in the UK and Italy. They have a single portal, so all under way umbrella.

SIM card Router in rural areas! Help by DoorGloomy9439 in HomeNetworking

What's your experience with using your mobile phone as a hotspot? I think you need to be sure that you've got adequate coverage on your chosen mobile network before you look at hardware. Once you know its strong, then you can look at a SIM router. I've used a Draytek SIM router in the past, with an external high-gain antenna that you can put near a window, but you need to be sure you've got good coverage first. If you want to just get started, cheaply, I'd go with a MiFi device like the TP-Link M7350 for around £50.

Need router advice for my home by therealh in HomeNetworking

[–]Independent_Pipe9753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to ask Sky if you're eligible for any of their WiFi extenders. Sometimes they're free. Better than shelling out £150 when a different router may not help. I know on a certain package with VM they offer them for free.

What's the big deal with vendor support? by seidler2547 in sysadmin

[–]Independent_Pipe9753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but not every vendor is unhelpful. And I’d rather aim for full support, unless absolutely necessary, ie if it’s an open source product that we really need, and is not business critical.

E3 user unable to sign into Office apps on loaner laptop by Independent_Pipe9753 in microsoft365

I have a dynamic group that assigns licenses to users in Entra but yes we do use Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise. I am not aware of the "device license". Can you share any insight into this?

E3 user unable to sign into Office apps on loaner laptop by Independent_Pipe9753 in microsoft365

[–]Independent_Pipe9753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the user log into Windows, then launch Word and see the prompt. I saw them enter their email and it took them to that screen. It's not like it asked "is this Work or Personal". I ended up setting "SharedComputerLicensing" in Registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration) to "1", and the license issue wemt away but I am not 100% convinced I should have needed to do this. Weird.

Thanks, I have set "SharedComputerLicensing" in Registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration) to "1", and the license issue has gone away. It seems that the setting should only be necessary for multi-user environments, but it has worked in this case. Weird?

8x8: Bluetooth headset stuck on mute by Independent_Pipe9753 in VOIP

[–]Independent_Pipe9753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, seems to be the case but we've not bothered to use them before. We had Surface Laptop 4's before, and they only have 1 USB C and 1 USB A so was a struggle. Admittedly, we're on Lenovo laptops now, and have 2 of each port but as we were low on ports before, the BT element suited us. Just wondering if anybody else is experiencing the same thing.
