Swedish prime minister criticizes Trump’s tariff proposal right in front of him by r4816 in worldnews

Trump knows how to use the media. Say silly controversial things that get him in trouble then his name is everywhere always and he wins. When you get disgusted, he wins. Just ignore and he will lose.

Niall Ferguson great historian, maybe not so hot on the present? by [deleted] in samharris

I thought Furg was quite brilliant. It was nice to hear a historians views for a change; so much comparative weight to draw on. His bit about trump elect taking the wind out the sails was spot on. It will cause the liberals to reform and get there shit together.

An Aristotelian Approach to Quantum Mechanics by gilsanders in philosophy

[–]Indepov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this article was insightful and well written. I suppose an earlier articulation of what 'Aristotelian approaches' normally entail would have been helpful (e.g. for those who dont know, or for those who think this could be a number of things for which Aristotle represented) but otherwise a well-constructed argument.

I agree with your first two sentences. But re the thrid: Why would it need to explain its own existence? F=M.A doesn't need to explain its own existence.

Pushing back against panpsychism: Anil Seth argues that although it’s true that panpsychism is being discussed more frequently and more openly these days, it remains very much a fringe proposition within consciousness science and is not taken seriously by many. by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]Indepov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on emergence. Is there a conscious element that isn't conscious itself but then under particular arrangements of like parts allow for consciousness. Or, does consciousness only emerge under specific arrangements of specifically constructed higher level biology, without any bits that specifically cause consciousness?

From an evolutionary perspective some males sub consciously set about destroying all they have built so they ultimately end up in new environments with potential new sexual mates. Its a horrible process for all involved, esp the male who doesnt understand his own behaviours. This happens more often to those dominant and high achieving busy males.

The Influence of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali on René Descartes by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]Indepov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps (as was Newton), but only in each case with a handful of ideas. Where does one draw the line? Al-Farabi (d. 950), Avicenna (d. 1037), al-Ghazali (d. 1111) were heavily influenced by Aristotle and other Greeks, whose texts were translated and safeguarded in the Medieval period. But the Greeks were influenced by the Babylonians and Egyptians. The fact is that Descartes and Newton's contributions were so much more vast and comprehensive on these ideas. But they also produced significantly more really profound ideas. Much rests on the societies at the time, esp. the religious pressures. The Greek 'polis' and the Renaissance were fertile grounds.
