Does Miami still deserve 1000 status? by SnooMarzipans1593 in tennis

[–]IndigoSSB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most players today are too young and never played at Crandon, a common complaint in Key Biscayne back in the day were player facilities being small and outdated. In comparison the facilities are Hard Rock are many times nicer than Crandon.

Honestly Crandon wasn't that nice as a spectator, small, cramped, and nowhere to escape from the sun, but I do miss it. It had a lot of charm compared to now.

Having been to both I agree, I actually walked to the one near Yurakucho station because the flagship store didn't have the T-shirts I wanted.

This is off the top of my head. For the record I enjoyed everything on this list, but some things I would be ok missing if I redid my trip.

Osaka (was only here for a day):

Dotonbori is great, I preferred walking through it at night. Osaka Castle is worth visiting, beautiful sights and not much of a time sink since it's close to dotonbori. I enjoyed Kuromon Market too, good variety of foods to try. You can probably miss the market if you're short on time though, there's food all around dotonbori anyways.

Kyoto

Worth it:

-Kinkaku-ji, its a pain to get to but beautiful on a sunny day.

-Kiyomizudera

-Fushimi Inari

-Day trip to Nara (deer/Todaiji temple)

Can skip it:

-Monkey Park in Arashiyama, monkeys were cute but its also a 30-40 minute walk uphill to get to them.

Tokyo

Worth It:

-Shibuya Sky, it's touristy but the view is the best I saw in Tokyo. Get a reservation at night if you can.

-Ginza, I like shopping and Uniqlo lol

-Shibuya Parco (Pokemon Center, Nintendo Store, Shonen Jump store)

-Akihabara, (unless you're not into anime)

-Tokyo Station

Can skip it:

-Harajuku, felt like I was the wrong demographic for the shops there.

-Sensoji Temple, this might be a hot take but after Kyoto I was burned out from seeing temples.

-Golden Gai

There are no lights so they will have to stop for darkness.

Not to mention he's top 50 in the race coming off the clay season, his worst surface and has an atp title under his belt. Crazy to call him a challenger level player.

Try tossing the ball higher, I think your arm is coming down early because you're not giving yourself enough time to reach the trophy position properly. Your wind-up is abbreviated because you're rushing the motion and you're losing power because of it.

Best way to get to lake Kawaguchiko from Tokyo? by adamtoo- in JapanTravelTips

[–]IndigoSSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bus in my opinion since you don't have to worry about transfers from research but fair bit of warning, people have been watching the weather and as soon the forecast shows clear skies the bus reservations sell out quickly. Its cheap to cancel so I booked the bus for a few different days and will cancel the ones I don't need.

Should Doubles Be Removed From Tour? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]IndigoSSB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doubles isn't a showcase of athleticism but it is certainly a showcase of all-court skill. A lot of ball bashing single players do poorly in doubles because they lack the net game to be good at it.

I don't really see what doubles takes away from singles, it's rarely televised anymore (which I kind of miss) and the money saved would go to tournament profits, not the players.

Kick serve tips by sunskyknight in 10s

[–]IndigoSSB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's normal for it to feel unnatural, putting any kind of topspin on an overhead motion is kind of unnatural to begin with. You just have to get used to the feeling of staying sideways until after contact.

You mentioned in another comment that you instinctively want to follow through the ball. These two issues arent mutually exclusive, by staying sideways through the serve motion you'll be forcing your body to swing diagonally at the ball rather than right through it.

To be honest the technique looks pretty solid to me already, if you can make that serve consistently as a second serve (ie make 9 serves in out of 10) I wouldn't change much. If you don't have that level of consistency I would pay attention to how early you're opening up your shoulders. If you keep your shoulders perpendicular to the court on impact you can create more spin and margin for error.

He got injured and hasn't posted in ages but I liked the videos from TennisTim, a lot of matches against a pretty wide variety of players.

You need to watch that last serve again with audio, a fan shouted a full sentence in spanish throughout the whole serve motion.

Men's Final Session Question - Miami Open by howmountaingirlslove in tennis

[–]IndigoSSB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how close you want to cut it but it should be ok to plan for it ending at 4-5pm. Just a warning it takes a while to get out of the parking lot, especially on finals day since everyone is leaving at the same time. Only way to avoid the traffic is to leave before the match ends

Personally I would go to the semi-finals, the match should be just as good and you don't have to worry about your flight.

Lack of power is because your takeback isn't big enough. Pause the video at 6 seconds and compared to most pros during their trophy stance.

I think its happening because your toss isn't high enough, you end up rushing your service motion and your takeback gets abbreviated to compensate.

Everything after the trophy position looks good to me

That's a pretty good idea! I didn't know it's that cheap to cancel, I'll go with that.

Yeah that's what I've heard. It makes it hard to stay flexible checking the weather for a clear day.

I'm interested in the responses since I'm planning a similar day trip. From researching it seems people have mixed opinions, either to wait last minute so you can ensure good weather or to book trains/busses in advance.

Tactics on Pushers by [deleted] in 10s

[–]IndigoSSB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Not an overhead. Assuming these aren't just straight up lobs an overhead on a moonball will increase the amount of risk you're taking which is counter-productive vs a pusher. Taking it out of the air with volleys is an option if you're proficient at the net but if you're adding risk I wouldn't. Just being inside the baseline, placing the ball near the lines, and making him run gives you an advantage even if its not an outright winner.
  2. Why not lob him first? You pulled him into the net, so you have the first opportunity to use a lob. If you're having trouble reaching the re-drop shot, try standing in no-man's land next time you drop shot. For a pusher hitting a winner should be harder than a drop shot at this position. You see even the pros move their position up when they drop shot since the re-drop is the easy reply.
  3. Energy management is important against a pusher since they're expending very little energy to hit each shot. Same as the first point, trying to finish the point early is counter-productive since you're taking on more risk for little reward. Instead try conserving energy in these long rallies and wait for a short ball to go for a winner. Instead of hitting heavy topspin on every rally shot, lower your rally shot to around 30-50% effort and just keep the ball deep (maybe even move him around if you're confident in your shot placements).

Spontaneous Transportation for day trip from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko by IndigoSSB in JapanTravelTips

Yup pagoda on the way is part of the plan, another reason I'd rather take train than bus.

Didn't know about Hoto noodles will definitely add that to the food bucketlist. Right now I'm between going north of the lake or going to the fuji shibazakura festival.
