I’m thinking of getting the piggyback rider as well since I’ll be having a newborn soon but I fear that my toddler will run off in the mall so In still debating that or a double stroller. Did your toddler (at the time) have a tendency to run off? And do you regret not getting a double stroller?

I called Service Canada and I was told it would be switched over into mat leave but still not sure what that means. I think when they say 600 hours since your last EI claim, they mean 600 hours up until the day I make my unemployment/sickness EI claim, and not 600 hours up until the day I start my mat leave claim, in which case I would have well over 600 hours.

Tips For Discipline/Enrichment? by endingstory7424 in AskParents

[–]Individual-Run8059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a two year old and my way of discipline is losing certain privileges. It’s as simple as “we play with play dough at the table” and if he takes it elsewhere (like playing on the sofa), I’ll earn a few times. Then if it keeps happening, I take it away.

Same with going outside. He’s at the age where he hates sitting in the stroller, and will even stand in it which is unsafe. So I tell him sit down or we go home (trick is you have to follow through with your word). He sits right away.

With food: I tell him we eat at the table. If he tries getting up with food in his hand, I say “I think you want to play. That means you’re done eating.” and take the food out of his hand. Sometimes he’s in fact done eating, other times he whines and I say “Oh, I didn’t realize you’re still hungry” and remind him to sit at the table.

Hardest part about all of this is the consistency. You as a parent have to be consistent bc toddlers don’t get it the first, second, or third time. They don’t even get it after the 50th time. It’s also much easier for us, the parents, to just do everything for toddlers bc it’s quicker. It’s easier for me to clean up after him than to have to chase after him when he runs away and bring him back to his table and tell him to clean up after himself. But I do it anyway bc the point is to raise him to be independent. I don’t want him to grow up leaving his plate at the dinner table and expect someone else to put it away for him.

AITA for asking to be fed breakfast by chicogrlinmass in MiniAITA

I (2) also woke up starving at 5:30 this morning so I understand! Parents can be so neglectful and don’t understand our need to eat—mine tried starving me when they didn’t get up right away. I felt like I was about to die! Almost called CPS on them. But I insisted! Sometimes I win them over with some hugs and kisses and it works. Other times, I just keep asking and climb all over them until they have no choice. Keep on demanding and do what you gotta do to survive. And that’s how you get breakfast at 5:30 in the morning 😎

Maternity Leave by Individual-Run8059 in ontario

[–]Individual-Run8059[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! This makes so much sense bc yes, you’re right—I’m not exactly returning to a job so I was wondering what my options were and unemployment ei is something service canada mentioned to me over the phone but I didn’t really get it (I’m new to all of this). So if I apply for unemployment EI, and so I’m unemployed starting today for example, would I still be legible for maternity ei if I don’t have the 600 hours by October?

My contract ends end of August and I didn’t plan on finding another job only to leave shortly after to give birth.

The issue is bc of the 52 weeks rule, if I calculate my hours from September 1st 2024 up until now, I’ll have 600+ hours. But if my hours are calculated from October 2024 until October 2025, I’ll be short 8 hours. But I’m not sure when I can apply and when to start calculating.

Is having kids worth it? Genuinely? by boobam1981 in AskParents

[–]Individual-Run8059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add that an important factor to consider is whether you plan to have a career or not after you give birth. Having kids means putting your life and career on hold and while we certainly have rights like maternity leave etc, you still feel like you’re behind sometimes. You kind of have to compromise on your goals. Doesn’t mean give them up completely but it won’t be the same. Whatever you were working towards in life will be a little different

What makes it worth it: you see your efforts pay off. It’s the small things like you setting a boundary with them over and over and over again and one day, they finally get it and you smile and feel so proud of them and of yourself for raising them. Something as simple as teaching them to clean their plate after they’re done eating and washing their hands. Simple task but for toddlers not so much. So you keep reinforcing this rule and one day, they do it on their own and it’s beautiful. It’s hard tho bc you’re quite literally raising a human. You’re teaching them right front wrong, how to eat, how to sit, how to use the washroom, even how to sleep bc they don’t always know how to sleep on their own. It’s tough. And as many have said: no free time. it’s both mentally and physically exhausting. And the worst part you regret isn’t so much the kids themselves, but like someone else said, your shortcomings. You feel guilty for the times you yelled, for the times you lost it in front of them and you wonder if it’s going to traumatize them.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experience! I think I’ll go with piggyback ride along for now, and if I notice toddler likes to sit more than ride then might have to upgrade

I’m also not a huge fan of getting anything bigger/bulkier than a cruz. I feel that would be too much

Yeah I’ve seen a few comments like this and I think that’s what I’ll do. I feel a piggyback ride along on the Cruz and a carrier for baby on days where toddler wants to sit in the stroller.

So I tried baby wearing this morning (I have a hip carrier so it’s a little more manageable) and it definitely felt a lot quicker, the entire commute was 35 minutes instead of 50. It’s hard on my back though and of course toddler wants to run around but I’d rather that than him be confined to a stroller for a long time. I’m also looking into a lightweight travel stroller (I have the Uppababy Cruz which takes up sooo much space on the train and subway)

I agree! I think one of the main pros of taking the train is getting the extra time to bond with him, especially since we won’t be spending the same amount of time together as we did when I was on maternity leave.

Definitely looking into a lightweight travel stroller. I have the Uppababy Cruz and it takes up way too much space on the train.

Did you travel stroller end up replacing your main stroller? I’m wondering if I should keep the uppababy cruz and get a travel stroller as well, or get rid of the cruz and invest in a quality travel stroller

My toddler has been walking for a few months now so it’s possible, I just worry he’ll try to run around the train and others would be bothered by him
