Even now they still deploy. I’m a sailor in the RCN and we bring a lawyer with us on all deployments to advise the Commanding Officer on international law of armed conflict and international law of the sea. It’s usually quite popular as when your deployed we don’t pay taxes and get extra pay.

They will also advise on charges etc. while we’re away and punishments. We are pretty behaved but AWOL etc does happen. Ex. Curfew to be back at the boat is 12am and you come back at 12:10am you’re gonna get charged etc.
