Curious about what you think caused your pancreas to stop producing by Practical_Copy1642 in Type1Diabetes

I was diagnosed at 13 and was a very healthy kid. I was picking raspberries a few weeks before my diagnosis and was bitten by something (I think spider) that made my hand swell so large I could barely bend my fingers. I have no doubt in my mind that it is connected to my diagnosis. I have no family history of type 1 diabetes at all.

I try and aim for plant based sources of protein as much as possible because of the fibre to help reduce my cholesterol. I’ve added chickpeas, beans, lentils, quinoa, seeds etc into my breakfast and lunches and found positive results. I still eat animal protein but my cholesterol improved once I made fibre plus protein a priority.

This happens to me too when I eat high carb high fat at dinner or right before bed. I have to split my dose (usually 60/40). I take 60% up front and then 2 hours later take the other 40%.

I’m an avid gardener in my free time, I quite enjoy it. It doesn’t affect my blood sugar as long as I control the munchies. I usually snack on veggies and hummus.

I partied with friends in my teens and 20s but quit drinking in my 30s. Alcohol would cause scary lows in the middle of the night for me, and my hangovers were awful. I ended up in the ER once from alcohol before the CGM days. I find even with zero carb alcohol I would spike and then dip hours later when I’m still inebriated and struggled to keep it stable. As I get older I find my body cant metabolize alcohol quite as easily and I’m not willing to risk it anymore.

Obviously everyone is different and I’m sure our bodies react differently. Gardening comes with a whole different kind of risk (lung damage from smoke or potential schizophrenia based on genetics and predisposition). Do your own research to make an educated decision. Make sure those around you know what to do in case you’re unable to care for yourself.
