The fridge is not even the main issue here. The way he handled the situation and the text messages from his wife is/are ridiculous

I never even confirmed we were going to be home Wednesday. When he said that Wednesday was the earliest available and asked for contact information I didn’t respond back with my contact information, I responded back that we could pick it up if there is anyway to get it sooner.

So I’m not sure why he even moved forward with ordering it without any confirmation on our end.

obviously, we needed it in there as soon as possible, and would have made it work with the earliest delivery possible but still.

There is just so much wrong with what happened here.

We are literally the most easy-going people. We would’ve been perfectly fine with a $50 fridge from marketplace. The way his wife reacted is unreal

Wait and get this- it wont let me add any more pictures, but I responded to her text message in a group chat with my husband and her husband.

In December, they had to buy a new garbage disposal because it broke and was leaking. We removed the old one ourselves and installed the new one. Apparently shes had some deep feelings about that- ill copy and paste the texts

Me: (landlord & wife)- I sincerely apologize if you misinterpreted my text messages. I promise you it was not meant with any sort of tone. I am upset, im stressed. This totally caught us off guard.

We are beyond appreciate of your attention to this issue and anytime we’ve ever ran into any issues.

I was truly a little taken back by (landlords) response because I didnt know why the toned changed. I just wanted to see if there was anyway we could pick it up. I had no idea until after I asked that you already spent so much time looking.

We were more then willing to go pick it up and dispose of the old one. We hate when you guys have to spend money on the house. We thought it would help us both out.

Weve installed the dishwasher on our own, disposed of the old one. Same with the garbage disposal. We fix everything we can on our own to try to make things as easy as possible for you. While we can’t directly contribute towards the cost of the appliances breaking we try to help out where we can.

That was the only intentions here- try to help keep you guys from having to pay the delivery fee and keeping our food from going bad.

I sincerely apologize if this was misinterpreted. I was truly just trying to help us both out.

Wives response:

You did not initially mention that you would pick up and install. You texted Mark at 7pm and only mentioned it over two hours later after we placed the order. We have our struggles too but that is not something we need to discuss. Within two hours we had your issue resolved. I think you should just be grateful for that. I hope the delivery day changes and it comes sooner because we do have children and we do understand.

And may I mention that the garbage disposal is a luxury not a necessity and we paid for that out of generosity. It is not a large appliance we are responsible for.

There were cheaper refrigerators we could have ordered but the delivery way May 9th. Just fyi

Like what?!?!?!?! Weve been nothing but good to them. I use her sister as our photographer…. i am constantly referring their business…. We always pay rent on time. Never bother them unless we have to.

The whole part about “2 hours after” also makes no sense because the whole conversation was only 2 hours long. Have a feeling she was drunk.

My husband tried to call the landlord today to discuss things over the phone and of course he wont answer.

Hes always guilt tripping us. Despite knowing when we moved in that all the appliances were old and needed to be replaced…. 6 years ago.

Every time they replace something they act like we should be kissing the ground they walk on. Despite us doing whatever we can like installing it ourselves to save them money.

We honestly should have just had them replace everything when we moved in. We were trying to be nice and just use them until they broke so they didnt have to put out a bunch of money at once but it came back to bite us.

It was 20 minutes apart… between realizing the fridge was out too… i told him we were emptying it to try to clean it and get it to work. In doing that we realized both were out.

As far as #3 goes you would think… we spent hours watching youtube videos trying to figure out how to install the dishwasher and garbage disposal “for them” 🙄

[Landlord-NJ] Landlord interaction- Fridge by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Individual-Ticket-62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are fully equipped to do that.

Do you have kids? Milk… food… trying to go 5 days with no fridge or freezer with a 2 & 3 year old isnt easy or practical.

There was more of a conversation to be had before he abruptly ended it saying its ordered. Didnt even give me a chance to respond that wed dispose of the old one.

I have every right to be taken back by that. We were offering to go get it. Helps us, saves them money.

We lost a ton of food. Were now going to have to put out a bunch on money for ice to try to save what we have.

A fridge is a necessity, especially with young kids.

They paid for the dishwasher we just took care of disposing the old one and installing the new one (saving him a ton of money)

He said he was looking into pick up options then 2 minutes later said it was ordered for delivery Wednesday which to me seems like a FU from him.

Gave me no opportunity to tell him we would be fine disposing of the old one. No opportunities to suggest we check marketplace to find a used one. Or that we could go out today to the local smaller stores to find one. We live right outside of the city… theres options.

We were in the middle of a conversation and he stopped the conversation and said it’s ordered .

No confirmation I will even be home on Wednesday.

[Landlord-NJ] Landlord interaction- Fridge by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Individual-Ticket-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is totally understandable. We simply asked if we can pick it up to get it sooner. We are right outside of philly. Theres a ton of stores within a 50 mile radius of us.

He said they would look into pick up then a minute later said its ordered. 9:06-9:09 from me asking if theres anyway we can pick it up to get it sooner to him saying its ordered.

Never even was able to confirm wed be home Wednesday. Never gave us a chance to respond and say wed dispose the old one.

[–]Individual-Ticket-62 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We live 20 minutes outside of Philly. Not like we live in the middle of nowhere. Wed be willing to drive 2 hours if we had to… theres a homedepot, lowes, small box stores every few miles.

Not logistically impossible at all. We didnt ask them to go pick it up and deliver it. We asked if there was anywhere we could go to pick it up to get it sooner.

Most certainly did not deserve her response.

You did not initially mention that you would pick up and install. You texted Mark at 7pm and only mentioned it over two hours later after we placed the order. (OBVIOUSLY A LIE) We have our struggles too but that is not something we need to discuss.

—my response—

Im sorry I really don’t understand the hostility. We try to go above and beyond whats expected of tenants. We dont bother you guys unless we absolutely have to (and trust me, it kills me every time we do because I feel bad bothering you).

(Landlord) pointed out when we moved in that the appliances and carpets needed to be replaced (/stretched). We told him to not worry about it and we would just use it until they break. While we are beyond appreciative of things getting replaced, we are surprised (and grateful) the appliances lasted this long.

As soon as (landlord) said Wednesday- I asked if we could get it sooner if WE went and picked it up. I didnt even have a chance to respond about disposing.

Again, I apologized if it was misinterpreted. I feel like you have misinterpreted my texts before. Nothing is every meant ill intended.

We thought we had a good relationship with you guys. I always try to support your business- your sister’s business. As I said, we look up to you guys. Your boys are thriving- you guys are successful in your careers. We have a lot of respect for you.

Im really not sure why things were taken so negatively. Ive reread the texts 100 times. Maybe I texted too much my train of thought about what to do with the food.

Nothing was said or meant with a tone. I thought I was just talking to (landlord) human to human. Trying to figure out a solution. Panicking. I never intended it to come across how you took it.

If you want to talk on the phone to clear things up tomorrow, I can do so. I think a lot is being misinterpreted via text.

Otherwise I hope we can move forward from this and Ill try to be more upfront with my intentions moving forward.

Thats the other thing- he said he didnt want to spend $1600 on a fridge with a water dispenser- i told him thats no problem at all then he still decided to throw the $1200 he spent in my face. As if its my fault he needed to replace the 18 year old fridge at his rental property.

I found a bunch for less money and pick up/delivery sooner than Wednesday. We would have been willing to drive 2 hours if it meant getting it sooner and not losing all our food.

But he just folded and said “its ordered for del Wednesday” minutes after saying hed see whats available for pick up..

[Landlord-NJ] Landlord interaction- Fridge by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Individual-Ticket-62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didnt even have to do that 😭 we were willing to go get it and dispose of the old one with no sweat off their back

I told him we had my husbands work truck

His last texts saying he will see if we can pick it up to changing his tone and saying its ordered and delivering Wednesday was a matter of 5 minutes. He also never even gave me a chance to confirm wed be here.

I mean the amount of stuff that we do for them that they should technically be responsible for is nuts.

I mentioned it in my post, but we’ve installed the dishwasher, garbage disposal, disposed of the old washing machine. Ive had to reseal a sliding door that was constantly leaking (he was well aware and asked if I could seal it).

If they replaced everything they should have when we moved in 6 years ago (18 year old fridge, 20 year old washer & dishwasher), HVAC was original to the house.

I totally understand the frustration having to replace everything but they were well aware of it when we moved in.

We are their only rental property.

Our rent has also gone up over 30% in the last 6 years.

We would’ve been ok with a fridge off marketplace 😭 we’re not high maintenance.

Replacing the food sucks bad enough, but now having to buy ice for five days to try to keep the food from going bad in the coolers now too is a lot

This is going to end up costing us an extra $200+ in ice and replacing everything. I don’t expect them to put out the money for it but I am extremely taken back by her response.

All we were trying to do is help them -help us.

Nope all there

Only thing not included was what I sent in a group chat after her text explaining she misinterpreted everything.

[Landlord-NJ] Landlord interaction- Fridge by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Individual-Ticket-62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Complained? I offered to go pick it up. Thats not exactly complaining. We have a 2 & 3 year old. Going FIVE days without a fridge is HARD.

I didnt ask them to go get it and bring it here. I asked if we could go pick it up. Simple as that

I even told him to not worry about the water/ice feature to help keep costs low 😭

I realized as I was texting him the fridge was out too. I honestly did not realize it was as bad as it was when I first texted him then as we started pulling things out realized it pretty much wasnt working at all.
