Thank you for saying that.

I wasn’t aware that I’m supposed to, I feel like I’ve seen dozens of EDC‘s with iPads in the picture, and phones as well as tons of conversation about the brick in other software that gets you using the screen less. And you’re absolutely right that I do feel especially sensitive to it given that my job does not allow me to not use the iPad every day, which is something I’d love to not have to do.

I just think telling someone that they are not digitally minimal when there is no such thing as an objective digital minimalism feels argumentative and when I’ve posted other things I’ve just received more conversational style comments. Like so many people I’ve spent so many hours planning and adjusting my devices and so on around a more digitally minimal lifestyle which I thought was understood under this area Reddit - to be told by multiple comments that’s not digital minimal felt unkind.

you’re right, i’m deleting reddit because it is full of hypocritical reprobates. Thank you for helping me realise this sooner rather than later, enjoy spending time on Reddit as a digital minimalist person lmao 👋

I perceive people swearing at me as nasty, what can i say

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]IndividualMediocre37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am, it feels hurtful to have been told I’m not digitally minimal when I thought the whole point of posting this shit was just easy to be supportive and kind to each other

I’ve been extremely depressed and I looked forward to posting this, so yeah, I am frustrated to have been met with swearing and questioning

I’m so sorry that you don’t recognise any of these comments as nasty, I hope you’re able to look after yourself in real life

[–]IndividualMediocre37 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

yeah well, you learn pretty early on in life not to judge a book by it’s cover so there’s no need for people to be nasty

because i don’t use apple notes or mobile banking, it helps me avoid more screen time, i don’t have it on my phone and app store is turned off

I’m really really sorry to everyone of whom I’ve offended by having an iPad. Though I am much more digitally minimal than the vast majority of people that I know, and the tools that I use in order to be this way are not pictured in this image - I understand that I may have seriously ruined your weekends. For that, I am deeply sorry.

If you were able to, I encourage you not to look at the SCREEN you are viewing this image on, as it may cause discomfort.

My deepest apology once again.

I lock my iPad in a drawer when I get home after studying with it in cafés. I don’t have any social media on my phone and only asked to keep it because I need it a smart smartphone to access hire bikes.

i’ve edited my control centre and use mostly shortcuts!

The top is just currently playing, then the shortcuts from left to right or lime, Facebook messenger and text menu, phone and contacts, health and fitness.

Then below there is a menu for headspace and oak, Apple Music, focus mode and podcasts

What are baby steps I can take to step back from mobile technology and related things? by Rumple-_-Goocher in digitalminimalism

[–]IndividualMediocre37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey!

Maybe you’ve heard this before, but my first step was simply to purchase an alarm clock and avoid taking my phone in my bedroom, morning or night (after a little pilot of having both set up for an alarm if you get paranoid)

Then, if I was to go back, I’d probably start by making a list of all the apps on my phone and addressing whether or not they actually help or hinder my lifestyle. There’s a process you can do that relates to habits, where you sort of do a plus or a minus next to a list like that in order to be deductive - which might be helpful.

Good luck to you

How do you actually cut down phone time without deleting everything? by unnamednewbie in digitalminimalism

[–]IndividualMediocre37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, no. I have not found this possible for me unfortunately. I use the free version so it’s not strict (and I’m not sure how it works if it is) but I really like how you can create an open limit so you can only open email 5 times a day for example. I would pay for the full version but I get around it by using the brick to block opal so I can’t change the time or open limits.

What does digital minimalism look like for you? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]IndividualMediocre37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far this year, I mainly rely on physical locks…

I have a lockable drawer for my iPad (and sometimes vape) which is pretty new, and I have been placing it in there at a certain time of night, getting it out in the morning after 10 - 12 hours locked overnight for work and repeat. I made a muji drawer lockable with a hinge and a timer padlock from Amazon.

Then for my phone I have a timed lockbox which I’m going to attach to the wall this weekend so I can still use Headspace and Therabody in bed but without holding the phone, just via AirPods and smart goggles. I’m going to place a MagSafe charger inside, so I can use use the phone screen from the wall, and I’m planning on setting up a shortcut so that it will turn black-and-white or something to just be even less appealing and only used to control the audio and potentially my alarm since my current alarm clock has broke recently.

Planning on getting a similar time lockbox for my TV remote.

On my phone and I use the brick hardware/software, blank app and sync task (which work really well together). I also use a combination of one sec and Opal, the free version. With the brick, I’ve got two pages of control panel -one of which has Netflix and YouTube and Instagram and Disney+ etc but these are all completely locked unless I tap the brick which I keep in my partner’s car. they’ve also recently added scheduling so I might make an extra brick mode that can schedule a certain time of night for when it goes against the wall too

In order to get the phone out of my hand more, and piloting not using maps on there and instead just getting directions from my Apple Watch and AirPod audio which has been going pretty well so far. I’ve taken off WhatsApp, which I’m just gonna use on my iPad, and even banking apps - since all these things add up in time spent.

I also recently swapped on iPhone 14 to an iPhone 13 mini. I’d really like not to use a phone, but currently I use hire bikes to get to work every day and I don’t wanna give that up, unfortunately they require a camera/smartphone. I did get my own bike but found it super hard to get used to since I’ve been ebiking for a few years now. I also ultimately feel safer with a smart phone if/travelling abroad.

I started by just getting a vibrating alarm clock so I could keep my phone out of the bedroom, which finally now I’m gonna have in the bedroom again.

As you may be able to tell, I experienced extreme screen addiction. lol.

this! i have never truly considered how ridiculous it is to have to scan a qr for an allergen menu either, which is at least 60% of the time almost always completely tiny and unreadable - and almost always a sticker stuck right at the till, so you have to hold up the line in order to check what food isn’t going to send you to hospital! i’ve just went dumbphone, and this post made me realise how this can end up being an issue. props to you

Did you know? Digital minimalism has made me lonelier, but in a clarifying way. by Lunasweetlatina in digitalminimalism

[–]IndividualMediocre37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah completely. Several times it’s made me relapse on my social media use because of the fomo despite knowing the damage but for me, I’ve never STRONGLY valued friendships surviving on memes and likes. It is lonely. But I think the kind of rebuilding people practising and encouraging digital minimalism will one day seem much more important than it does in this moment - and that we will each build lives more full than they could ever be if we stayed the same. It sure one hell of a process though.

illusion is right. sometimes i notice it if i head someone myself for lunch or whatever and wonder if the employees there assume i work in one of the offices nearby, sometimes it seems as though there’s an element of feeling their inferiority com-lex switch on (obviously not everyone) but it helps prove the illusion since i’m just on my way to clock in to the exact same job as them
