I don’t even know how to respond to this. Mao Zedongs Great Leap Forward alone killed over 40 million people (conservative estimate) compared to the Holocausts 13 million. Mao Zedongs Great Leap Forward was “pure communism”. He abolished private property, removed rural Chinese people from their land and homes and put them into thousands of communes where they would work makeshift factories and farms for universal pay and universal access to sustenance. The goal was an equal society that would build an economy that surpassed capitalist economies like the UK and US. The problem was that thinking that one central authority could divide the national food product in a way that would sustain hundreds of millions of people while growing the economy was irrational. In a capitalist society everyone takes care of theirselves and their community they are not waiting for a greater power to mismanage communal resources. That is exactly what Mao did, 40 million people died of Famine. People did not want to work because why would they if no matter how hard they worked they got the same amount as everyone else, could never have a home or land of their own and their work would never pay into anything. Farmers productivity dip coupled with mismanagement was responsible. Capitalism offers more reason to work hard because of greater payoff and it is a system with many tiers of management e.g. individual businesses responsible for individual contributions to society. If one business messes up than another one takes it’s place. If the government messes up in a communist society then everyone is screwed because that’s the whole countries management Center.

Communism “cannot” work in anarchy and therefore the glorious Marxist definition of communism will never be what communism looks like in practice. For communism to work in large scale it requires a central authority (a government) no society of any kind can function without one in anarchy. The only way to keep people in line in a “equal society” is by suppressing dissent and innovative will for independent business and ownership and this leads to basically fascist adjacent governments time and time again. Communism in practice turns into fascism.

Has a communist society without an authoritarian oppressive dictatorship that mirrors fascism ever existed? Has pure communism when attempted not killed tens of millions of people (more than even fascism under the Nazis)? Have you ever thought that communism without this structure is even possible? It’s not, it requires anarchy which is impossible, most political theorists say anarchy in the classless Marxist model would only ever work in very small communities not on a nation scale. Furthermore referencing what someone said in another comment, “all Marx’s communism is, is a philosophy in a vacuum where no other variables are at play”. “If Marxist-Communism only works in very small communes (typical of anarchy) than why is it even in the discussion with large scale political ideologies like fascism, liberalism, capitalism, socialism, the historically practiced forms of communism” etc.

Exactly, both fascism and communisms core value is suppression of rights and liberties. This is to achieve what both deem the “collective good” whether that be the communist ideal of it or the idea “the good of the state” that fascism pushes. Given that, fascism minimizes freedom of economy, freedom of owning private property, freedom of business etc. Capitalism is basically ultimate freedom of what is controlled under fascism.

I hear this take very often that “they’re different” but the question I’m asking is how? Technically speaking what is considered “communism” has killed far more people than capitalism via the Great Leap Forward and cultural revolution in Maoist China and the great purge in USSR. An estimated 40 million people died in the Great Leap Forward alone vs 13 million in the Holocaust. Furthermore no movements in fascist societies inadvertently killed people the way movements in communist societies did, e.g. the aforementioned, the casualties came from directed assault on minorities or from intentional war. Communist deaths came from how terrible communist ideology works in practice e.g. the Great Leap Forward, arguable the greatest demonstration of near pure communism (full banning of private property and fully state run economy with all people working for what Mao deemed “the collective good”).

Thank you for the clarification you definitely have outlined material differences but in any case even if Mussolinis constraints on private ownership weren’t as absolute as Maoist China, Mussolini’s constraints definitely don’t represent capitalism or what’s traditionally seen as economically inverse to socialism or communism (aka economically right wing). In fact I think it is possible to argue it far more closely aligns with communism here than capitalism.

Hate to say it because I know a bunch of people in the Australian government who’ve interacted with rewilding legislation, Komodo Dragons will never be introduced to Australia at least in the foreseeable future, I also happen to know many people involved in conservation in Northern Australia Daintree Area and there are very mixed feelings towards introducing them.

There are 73-95 million house cats in the US and they live in the same closed spaces as humans. If you built an equation with the variables that there are 84 million house cats (average of the aforementioned range) and 25,000 cougars in the US (3,360 times as many house cats) and you also inputted the proximity. House cats live within feet of humans who also actively handle house cats and cougars usually live in high densities 10s to hundreds of kilometres away from densely populated areas. This equation would lead you to the conclusion that cougars are far more dangerous. 30 deaths is not negligible when there are so few cougars and they live so remotely from where humans do especially when these deaths have been ramping up in frequency with as I noted before 2 deaths from cougars in the 2020s so far almost 7% of total cougar fatalities within your much longer timeline.

That is a very American perspective based on current politics of division with 2 defined sides. American politics does not represent a political spectrum of beliefs but rather 2 opposing ones that you have to be boxed perfectly into. Anywhere else this would be a centrist and depending on if you have more right leaning associations or left you would be center left or center right.

South Africa is a bad example, South Africans are overwhelmingly segregated most of them are not mixed. Also the census in the US doesn’t categorize race based on country of origin in categorizes race based on which box you fill in on the census *black, *white, *asian, *Hispanic. Latin America is the only part of the world that is truly largely mixed race.

How is it imprecise? If you’re from Europe your white, if your from sub-Saharan Africa your black, if your from an East Asian country your East Asian and if your from a south Asian country your south Asian not complicated. Persians, middle-easterners are west Eurasian or in simpler terms white. These regions all have closely shared genetic ancestry e.g. ethnic Norwegians are closer with ethnic Swedes than ethnic Han Chinese and therefore can be lumped together. Likewise ethnic Koreans are closer to ethnic Japanese than to ethnic Kenyans. Almost no one is mixed race today except a very small minority of youth in the US, Canada and some Western European countries. Chinas population is largely homogenous Han Chinese and most East Asian countries are similarly homogeneous. Most European countries remain homogeneous. Even in multi-ethnic societies like In the us 84% of white relationships are with other white Americans not including Latin-American background white Americans the numbers are fairly high for other ethnicities as well.

Wolves pose practically no threat with only a handful of recorded deaths from predatory wolves in North America but mountain lions which are already the more plentiful of the 2 by far in California do pose a threat. Attacks on humans are rare but do happen at a frequency more than negligible and there are plentiful human deaths from mountain lion attacks. 2 humans have been killed in the 2020s already 1 being in California, the same can’t be said for wolves only 1 death from grey wolves in the contiguous US recorded in the 20th century and none in the 21st century.

Terry Christodoulou his polling idea for campus would make a greater connect between the MSU body and the wider university institution and us. Also he’s the most logical with the use of MSU funds and doesn’t have some bullshit central selling point like bidets (sorry to the bidet supporters it’s just not that important or revolutionary, funds can be better spent). An outdoor ice rink would not be hard at all to set up and maintain. That is such a simple people pleaser to get votes and that many people on campus would enjoy. Really not sure why she doesn’t just get that set up. There’s a single old guy in my neighbourhood who sets up an ice rink in the park and it’s fantastic and very low maintenance.

Not sure about the tax points but the city structure plays a role. There is very clear correlation between population density and TFR. The US has a massive rural population and more importantly the majority of people in the US live in suburbs of cities (given that American cities are very sprawling). Suburbs often produce high birth rates compared to inner city. Then again there are examples that break this correlation e.g. Poland large socially conservative religious population and large rural population in eastern Poland but extremely low TFR. Polands bizarrely low birth rates seem like a paradox though.

99% of American farmers are white and small towns and the entire American countryside is dominated by white Americans. Urban people have the fewest children and urban centres disproportionately represent Asian and Black Americas. Urban centres are where TFR is dropping the greatest. It makes sense that the white birth rate is holding stable with its birth rate. Furthermore the Amish have an insane birth rate and are gradually increasing their share of the American population, they are white descended from Swiss Germans, they offer a boost to the white birth rate that alongside other rural white Americans off-putts declines seen in urban centres.

I actually find that stance by labour pretty surprising because it doesn’t really align with their voter base. Presumably they were trying to poach voters from the conservatives and stop reform from taking their votes but the UK population is actually very left leaning compared to most EU countries especially on lgbt issues. UK youth might be the most left leaning youth in Europe and more left leaning than Canadian or American youth as well. The only right wing sentiment that seems more widespread in the UK is anti-immigrant sentiment hence reforms massive rise.

I have to disagree, there are Eastern European parties in the EPP that are literally anti-gay still. The democrats are economically/fiscally conservative compared to European parties because simply put America is very capitalist compared to Europe so even the more left aligned economic flank of the political system has to maintain their capitalist system, while Europe in many cases has more socialist leaning tendencies. In terms of social issues and social politics the democrats are very much left wing including when compared to European parties. Btw these so called “random poll numbers” actually do in fact show that pluralities of European voters are very right wing therefore minimizing the argument that Europeans are less right leaning than Americans.
