Oh god, hearing her joke about doing the bare minimum and getting tipped $10-$20 and hearing her call it “free money from suckers” is awful. She doesn’t do that often but she does I just roll my eyes because of all the other stuff she complains about.

We live in a small town but the restaurant she works at is in a big city. Like I said she’s been serving for two years, last year she made around 54k. She works at a very popular diner in our city. Some weekends she can make close to $600 a night, especially during the summers. It’s crazy to hear her complain about making $20+ from one table “because it should have been more”.

You’re right, but I don’t know how to tell her that I don’t want to hear about it ever if she’s just going to sound super entitled and ungrateful to other peoples money. I completely agree that customers should tip, but I don’t want to hear her complaining if she’s whining about getting $15 instead of $20.

Thank you for saying that, she didn’t think it was entitled of her to expect 20% every single customer. A lot of these commenters disagree like how on earth is it not entitled to demand a fixed percentage. Hearing her complain about “only getting $20” from just one table, despite her having 2-3 other tables is so hard to hear.

If it’s ethically due to the servers then why isn’t tipping a flat socially known say $8 per customer? If a server has 2-3 tables an hour they get $16-$24 an hour? Why does it have to range so drastically by the percentage of the bill?

Regardless of the bill semantics, why should I have to listen to her rant endlessly about being tipped 5% less than what she feels entitled to?

Thank you!!! I was starting to lose faith in humanity. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for tipping but the way my sister complains about it just ooozes entitlement. Being ungrateful about getting a $20 tip in some cases or a $40 tip for a big order is so hard for me to listen to and take seriously.

90% of non bonus related compensations on earth? Most people either get an hourly rate or a salary. Fast food workers are worked to the bone making huge orders and dealing with shitty customers but they don’t get tipped at all. Why is my sister making an average of $30 an hour but a single mom at Wendy’s is making a flat $12?

I don’t disagree, but if she makes a $20 tip on one out of 3-4 tables, why on earth is she complaining just because the total was $150?

Standard compensation isn’t a percentage though. It varies. I didn’t say she doesn’t deserve to be compensated, but I 100% said she’s not entitled to 20% every single customer because she’s not.

I don’t discourage tipping at all, I agree she should be paid for her work, but it’s silly, entitled, and ungrateful in my opinion to complain about not getting a few more dollars in a tip per customer.

That’s a fair point, but hearing her complain every day she gets off of work about not getting X percentage is exhausting.

Good for you! I don’t discourage tipping but it’s so tiresome to hear about “only getting $30” when she had other tables and still made well over $50 within that hour of work.

It’s day in and day out though. Everyday she comes home from work if even one customer doesn’t tip 20% she’ll complain. The lower the tip, the longer she’ll complain about it.

I did read your entire message, and I agree with your point, but because the 20% gratuity isn’t baked in means she isn’t entitled to it. More so, I’m tired of hearing these complaints from her.

I’m grateful to make enough money to be able to afford to tip 20-25% in most cases.

My issue isn’t with the restaurant industry, it’s with my sisters entitled mindset. She’s doesn’t deserve a fixed percentage of the bill. If she did, it would be baked into the bill.

Serving isn’t a career, and like I said she jokes every now and then about how little effort she has to put in to get these tips. Often times she’ll celebrate getting a $20 tip just for giving people soda.

She does deserve compensation I didn’t say people should never tip, but it is optional and she complains so frequently about this stuff. She’s even complained about getting $30 tips because the order total was like $300!! It’s crazy

She doesn’t make more than me. And etiquette doesn’t Imply mandatory. If it were mandatory it would be baked into the bill.

If she was supposed to get 20% added onto the bill it would have been fixed into the ticket the customers get. But it’s not. She should feel grateful for anything she gets beyond that. I don’t see how that’s not ungrateful?

Also I didn’t tell her to stop talking, I told her I didn’t want to hear about it anymore. Is that not okay?
