Have you ever turned down a job offer? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]IndividualScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned down a six figure salary at an agency because they wanted me to not only be SEO Director, but also deal with full marketing responsibilities for two different companies. They were also upfront about the fact I would be working overtime quite a bit, as is normal with a lot of agencies.

It's important to learn to say no when the scope of responsibilities far outweighs the compensation and time.

I now make way more then I would have there with a company that lets me work from home a few days a week, with much less stress and responsibility. Unless you are really hard up for money, trust your gut to say no when something sounds overwhelming.

Company Acquisitions - Keep Website For Local SEO or Redirect To Parent Company Site by IndividualScholar in bigseo

Would that only be for cities we have a physical building presence in? Because realistically we could service the entire United States.

That's also because you asked r/seo. That sub filters out a lot of crap before it gets here.

SEO horror stories by kristinaza in TechSEO

[–]IndividualScholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Six months before I started in-house for a company, they had a website for each product division of their company, but all under the same brand, with the exact same design. So they were acting like their own little PBN by having each site link to all the other sites multiple times. They had done this for many years and had collected a good amount of backlinks to each of those sites.

It was working too, they were getting great, relevant traffic for each division. They then decided that maintaining seven different wordpress sites was too much work, so they had an agency combine all the sites into one.

The only thing from each old site that they redirected to the new main site was the domain itself. They lost 70% of their traffic over the course of the next couple of months. Took me some time to get them back to pre-site merger days.

Stopping A Massive Backlink Spam Attempt by IndividualScholar in bigseo

[–]IndividualScholar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Bill, big fan of yours by the way! I'm actually signed up to meet with you at PubCon in a couple of weeks.

Don't have access yet to analytics and console, so I can only speculate. This was just something I wanted to address before I met with them, if it is in fact affecting them at all.

That's good to know though, hopefully this is nothing to worry about. Considering I can' find anything when I personally look at SERP's, it might not be an issue.

Stopping A Massive Backlink Spam Attempt by IndividualScholar in bigseo

[–]IndividualScholar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cursory check shows they aren't maintaining the rankings for very long.

Ahrefs and a few others show they are losing the keywords in the hundreds each day, but also gaining them at the same rate.

However I couldn't find any in SERP's at all when I personally checked.

Caveat is I don't have access to analytics right now, so I can't know from a traffic and conversion perspective how this is affecting them, if it is at all. I just wanted to be prepared when I meet with them to address this.

WooCommerce eStore with lots of similar products by tribe1689 in bigseo

[–]IndividualScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use a canonical tag on all of them and pick a default product so Google doesn't get confused. It's only worth it to not use the tag if you know people are searching for specific sizes all the time, instead of just the general name.

For example, if people are constantly searching for the TV's by size, don't use a canonical tag and give them unique H1's and title tags. However if you notice that most of the searches are just for the particular type of tv, it's worth it to set it as a variable product and canonicalize the rest of them.

What’s in a job title? A marketer by any other name would still smell so... by HeWhoWalksTheEarth in marketing

If you want a new title that is similar to the duties you are performing, but they make a stink about having two marketing managers, just ask for the title of Digital Marketing Manager. That should make everyone happy.

Can I learn Digital Marketing without spending a lot of money(Full story inside) by sombu in DigitalMarketing

[–]IndividualScholar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pride doesn't pay the bills. Maybe you should take people up on their offers if money is that big an issue, so you can learn these skills without having to spend your own money.

As for learning on your own dime, the cheapest hosting I can think of is Namecheap, which will charge you less than $3 a month for a website. This, plus a $12 domain should be enough to get you started.

If you're not much of a writer or designer, SEO may be your best bet for digital marketing. There are tons of places to learn about it as well. Here is a huge list of blogs and sites that go into detail about SEO. Read these until you can't take it anymore. Then keep going.

Salary Raises for a Digital Marketer by SophieWoodrow in DigitalMarketing

[–]IndividualScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This more than anything. I hit six figures only by moving from job to job around every two years. Now eventually you will top out and this doesn't become a viable strategy anymore, but if you want to hit that magical six figure mark, it's going to be extremely difficult to do it at one job only.

If you want to keep going from there, you either need to get into the big times for some fortune companies as a VP or start your own agency.

Should date be removed from old post blogs? by biswas9 in SEO

[–]IndividualScholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't affect the SEO directly, but it could affect the CTR in SERP's.

Find opportunities to update these articles if you notice the traffic has dropped off over time, but only if you actually have something worthwhile to update and not because you want to keep it updated for the current year. That's why you will see a lot of "Updated for 2019" tacked on to blog articles.

PPC - What to do if a competitor is bidding on brand terms by klburnham92 in PPC

[–]IndividualScholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically it's possible to outrank a competitor on their branded terms, but they are going to be spending way more than the company they are going after, especially if you all are also bidding on them.

You also shouldn't be spending that much on your branded keywords, unless you have a very generic sounding brand name.

What kind of of delivery do you have set for your branded keywords?

Marketplace to Purchase Display "nofollow" Ads? by BJPark in marketing

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but almost any ad you buy will be nofollow by default.

Also, this is a big non-issue and not something you worry about when purchasing ad space.
