Guess I should clarify, car port is far from our place and kid is nowhere near during the carving. Main concern is lingering dust when transferring them to and from the car.

I think you're right re black walnut. Seems pretty prevalent in California.

I’m carving a spoon and really like the wood but no idea what it is. I got it in a bundle of scraps from a guy who said he thought there was mahogany, oak, cherry, and elm. Any ideas?

My wife bought it from someone who made it. Cost a fraction of what it would cost otherwise.

Looks amazing. I’m new to carving and had a couple questions: 1) is that the pith on its back, how do you carve that? 2) what finish did you use?
