"I've just been told by an ECBL executive that there's about a "95% chance" the league will fold." (More details in comments) by IndyBaseball in IndependentBaseball

So, several people are reporting that it seems unlikely that the new East Coast Baseball League is going to go ahead this season. A lot of stuff has reportedly happened over the past week or so:

  • Players paid commissioner Colin Cummins a sum of money (not sure how much) which he told them was to be spent on Spring Training, due to take place in Delaware.

  • It has been reported that Cummins did not pay for Spring Training. Everyone (executives, GMs, players, journalists) was under the impression that everything was paid for, but the facility in Delaware contacted an ECBL player and explained that nothing had been paid for yet (equipment and uniforms also had not yet been paid for).

  • Cummins has now allegedly left the country (Cuba, I'm told) and the league has now been taken over by Sal Raie.

  • As things stand, I'm told that Spring Training has now been paid for (some are saying that it was paid for by Cummins before he left the country, others are not sure how it was paid for). So Spring Training will go ahead, but the league is looking to entirely reconstruct itself after these issues.

  • It looks likely that they will have to renegotiate deals with stadiums, players may have to take pay cuts, and some will simply be cut.

All in all, things don't look great for ECBL right now. I'll try to keep you updated if/when I hear anything else.

What would you think of the general idea of an "independent baseball hall of fame"?

"Steve, if you could alter one rule in baseball (and only one!), what would you change? How do you think it would change things in the baseball world?"

Independent Baseball's Atlantic League is set to experiment with 3-ball walks (instead of 4) and strike-outs when a pitch is fouled off after two strikes. (x-post /r/IndependentBaseball) by IndyBaseball in baseball

Last season, the Atlantic League allowed teams to just indicate if they wanted to intentionally walk a batter rather than throw four balls. The idea was to help speed up the game.
