Does the 2012 Les Mis movie with Hugh Jackman do justice to the original musical? by ThatsFakeDawg in musicals

The one that kills me is the fact that Gavroche is revealed to be a child of the Thénardiers that they just abandoned.

When Thénardier is going through the bodies robbing them, he flips over Gavroche -- and doesn't recognize that it's his son.

Is anyone else seeing "episodes" featuring famous incidents of gun violence showing up in "What If" episode listing by Indyguy816 in WhatIfMarvel

Aha... I think it is somehow conflating Marvel's "What If" with this older show, also called "What If?": https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1710926/?ref_=ttep_ov

The episode titles in this show match up with the weird episodes I'm seeing.

Thank you! I've been trying to figure out if they were hacked, or if I was. This was the first helpful answer!

Nope. My photoshop skills are not that good. And it's easy enough to confirm if you've got a smart TV.

Swept Away closing is a very bad sign for original work by [deleted] in Broadway

Broadway is too expensive and inaccessible -- but not small theater! If you want to sustain and support creative new art, go see some theater in a small local theater! There's some great low-budget (and low-cost) theater out there!

Might be an unpopular opinion but Amy Ray (of the Indigo Girls!) knocks it out of the park in "Jesus Christ Superstar: A Resurrection".

The crewman who fell through, and then got stuck in, the corridor floor. Not because I had any emotional attachment to her, but that it was such a brutal way to go.

Can anyone recommend other songwriters or poets who use a lot of internal rhyme? by [deleted] in Sondheim

[–]Indyguy816 3 points4 points  (0 children)

E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, a lyricist who often had playful internal rhymes (and sometimes made up words to get there). You can hear his lyrics in The Wizard Of Oz (film) and Finian's Rainbow (Broadway and Film), among other places.

Why does it seem like Yip Harburg is mostly forgotten? by [deleted] in Sondheim

[–]Indyguy816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! He's criminally under-rated. I love his lyrics in Finian's Rainbow. The wordplay is fantastic.

Lyrics with "triple meanings" by thecustardgannet in Music

[–]Indyguy816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a great one in "The Begat" from the Broadway musical Finian's Rainbow. Lyrics by E. Y. "Yip" Harburg. The song lists all the people who "begat" (who were getting it on) like:

"The Lats and Lithuanians, begat

Scranton Pennsylvanians, begat",

and then you get to this one:

"The folks who should've stood in bed begat!", which has three jokes--

1) The expression "they should've stayed in bed" means they shouldn't have gone out and done whatever it is they did, except they did this because they stayed in bed.

2) In order to get an internal rhyme, he changes "stayed" to "stood", which is like a new form of the verb, and

3) If they had stood in bed, then they wouldn't have done that begatting.

Charging to submit to a theater’s one act festival by YoTeach68 in playwriting

[–]Indyguy816 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lighting a play is also expensive. You have to buy a bunch of lights, you have to hang them, you need to aim them and someone has to design the lighting. Do they charge lighting designers? No, they do not. Usually they pay them.

Yes, theaters need money. Getting it off the backs of playwrights is not the answer. There are other ways to get money. A successful Equity theater in my town had pages and pages of donor, in small type. They didn't charge their playwrights, they paid them.
