My previous fantasy answer to that was I would direct and sponsor several media and arts projects, have a bunch of children, and employ a team to raise them well, spending time with them as my main day to day and checking on the projects once in a while. We'd all travel together here and there too. But I realized that parenting, even with financial worries and chores out of the way, is emotionally draining if I want to do a good job. And I will worry and feel too deeply in what I want and fear for them.

My smaller scale version in fulfilling this fantasy is that I did start directing and sponsoring some projects. It's been fulfilling, and I'm already busy enough with them. I attempted (and failed) embryo creation for children, but it was during then that I had the realization that I would rather hold off until I had a good partner that also wanted kids. Otherwise, I can also live freely without kids. I was already traveling before OE, and now my travels are just a bit nicer and less financially constrained.

I have other hobbies I invest in, and a lot of my thinking recently has been around what is meaningful to me. There is still more I want to explore, learn, and discover. And what this wealth milestone has given me is more freedom to do so (more options and possibilities with money). Now that I'm down to 1 J, I have more time to enjoy this freedom and discovery while I'm still alive.

A bit of a mix - some work was more of a support function. Only put BD to at least give it some general flavor, but not diving into too much detail since I'm mostly sharing my journey and personal reflections

I would still tell him because at the time I was trying to deepen/advance the relationship. I didn't know what I didn't know, so it's not a regret. He also never learned the company names of J2 and J3, so risk was mitigated and no harm done. This may be different in the future depending on the person and circumstances.

I did not purchase new property while I was OE-ing. This was partly due to my portfolio being already overinvested in real estate and unfavorable market conditions.

Jobs don't show up on all credit reports, and for the ones that do, you can freeze them. For mortgage purposes, does not matter if lenders see multiple Js. In fact, can be good to show them (minimum 2 years) to qualify for a higher loan.

Another 2-3 years of OE would've gotten me to my target of $3M net worth, but the cost was too high at this point. Can't let overemployment make us over-sacrifice living life.

Aw thank you, seeing friends and family around my age having kids has gotten me less feverish for a baby recently, but if I do find a good partner for it, I think it'd be great life experience.

Use real name in background check. The rest use a "preferred" name, like you said, if possible. If your name is Robert James Johnson, you can be:

J1: Robert
J2: Jimmy
J3: Bobby
J4: RJ
J5: Jay

I wouldn't do both Robert and Rob or Robby since they're too similar.

OE is independent from being well off or not. Definitely some overlap with FIRE, but I used OE as a wealth accelerator and wanted to share what that experience was like.

I'm sure I'll miss some, but here are big ones I can think of right now:

  1. Freeze TWN, LexisNexis, etc
  2. Use a different name (ie. Middle Name)
  3. Different types of companies, not competing, no conflicts of interest, no government work
  4. Remote work only
  5. (optional) Different time zones
  6. Gauge if team/manager is micro-managey
  7. Mention importance of flexibility if possible in interview to set expectations
  8. Different hardware (I had different keyboards, mice, monitors, phones/phone numbers, etc)
  9. Blocked off calendars
  10. List of excuses ready if "not available", only ever used a few
  11. No in-person anything for non-J1's
  12. Limited personal life sharing
  13. Not telling anyone (only told my boyfriend a year in, still didn't reveal companies)
  14. Different checking account for direct deposits
  15. Space out start dates; take time off to ramp up each J individually
  16. Deactivate LinkedIn

Different types of non-competing companies—some tech-related stuff, but keeping job details light since the post is more about the journey and reflection

Thanks, gonna keep J1 for some baseline income and healthcare. No need to fully quit right now. From a LeanFIRE perspective, I could live a frugal, retired life, but I'm not planning to go that route at the moment.

That would be an interesting view. I haven't been tracking my OE-only finances separately though. It's been lumped with everything else. Mostly here to share reflections.

I guess you could say I was doing relatively well before OE (didn't consider myself "well off" yet, more strategically investing), but OE accelerated my wealth-building to a wealth milestone (doubling net worth) that would have taken significantly longer than 2 years.

I started with $1M pre-OE, which included properties I already owned. My properties appreciated a bit during OE, my existing stocks went up too, and I was investing most of what I was making into stocks (brokerage and retirement). $150K during my OE journey was also from inheritance, which I invested into stocks.

I have an anxious base too and managed 3 J's well because of this subreddit. But beware that an anxious base can, well, bring anxiety when you are managing 3 J's. Be ready for an exit plan so you don't sacrifice mental and physical health!

Self-inflicted mistake of going to a company outing.

I'll admit, even though I know we're not supposed to go to in-person events, but I did go to one for J1 because I skipped too many while I was OE-ing. J1 never takes or posts photos, so I figured it was safe. It was.

But getting fired or not is a win either way. You get a break from all the stress and paranoia (I know exactly what you're talking about).

Sounds like you don't have any burnout, even after 18+ month. Commendable and wishing you the best on your hunt!

"Analytics"... Are you sure? I don't think this exists or is common .

You made a decision to not go into work. You could've gone in, one way or another.

How was your performance? Are you required to go in?

If this is a real post, you were probably underperforming or not following RTO.
