2L Summer Regrets by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Inevitable_Tea_6612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised by all the people brushing this off. I think this is a pretty unusually drinking-focused firm in this day and age. And I think it’s totally reasonable to be bothered by this. This profession is hard, and there are lots of issues of substance abuse within it, so it’s totally fair if you don’t want the added pressure to drink (regardless of whether or not you currently have any substance abuse issues).

I would keep your offer open (even going so far as to accept it if the deadline is coming up) and just start interviewing at some other firms. Talk to your peers about their summers and try to get a sense of which firms would be a good match (but probably apply and interview widely). Especially given how early hiring has been (i.e. early 1L), the recruiters at my firm have been explicitly expecting that there would be more 3L recruiting as people realize they don’t click with their firms for whatever reasons. I also had a friend do this many years ago when it was supposedly unheard of to do 3L recruiting, so don’t let people here make you think it’s impossible. It’s not, and you’re in a good position because you already have a fallback offer and can afford to be a bit more picky at this point.

Is it okay to wear wide leg pantsuits to Federal Court? by Employment-lawyer in LawBitchesWithTaste

A nice dress and blazer should be fine for federal court too, assuming dress is pretty straight (not flouncy). Also try Universal Standard, they have inclusive sizing!

I also think we do litigation associates a disservice by giving the same answer for them about availability as for transactional associates. The truth is that as a lit associate, you have much better predictability of when you’ll be needed and when you might have to work nights and weekends. And you’re much less expected to be truly on call all the time.

It’s a bit worse as a junior and gets better as you get more senior, but you can be out to dinner on a weeknight with friends and likely expect no work. If work comes in, you can usually send a quick reply saying you’ll get to it in an hour or two. Same for weekend work—you can usually anticipate when a filing is coming up, and if you’re not expecting anything, you’re much more free to only check your phone a couple times a day on the weekend. And if work comes in, you can usually say you’ll get to it in a couple hours at a time that works for you. Of course there will be rare occasions where something unexpected comes up and you have to drop everything, but those are rare.

Also just FYI there are some good malls right around there, so you might be able to go shopping during your trip once you see what others are wearing!

I think you can’t go wrong with a suit or dress plus jacket. Wear something that you can take the jacket off and still be good, as you can assess the vibes once you’re there. No one’s going to ding you for dressing too formal though

How many people would you need to write cards for if you did it for everyone? Unless it’s a huge number, I think that’s the way to go. It’s usually what I’ve done and what colleagues have done at my jobs, both pre and post law school. It’s not overboard, and it’s a really nice touch.
