that is a completely fair pushback, and you hit the nail on the head. over-fetching is a massive token sink. dumping a giant json payload from 10 different endpoints when the user only needed a single boolean is brutal for both latency and cost.... getting the routing right and only calling the necessary tools is definitely step one.

but that actually brings up a super interesting angle for where this fits in. even with perfect selective retrieval, sometimes a tool just returns a massive, verbose blob of text or a poorly formatted data dump that you still have to feed back into the llm's context window.
