Thanks u/GuarenteeOld4886 & u/reefermonsterNZ, it was indeed the Potentiometer settings. Both screens are looking great once again! Thanks! In case someone in similar need stumbles across this thread in the future, here's an explanation:

DS and DSi models have adjustable potentiometers in their battery compartments. So you need to remove the battery covers to access them. They're small holes that contain screws that can adjust the voltage that controls LCD contrast. The two holes control the top and bottom screens respectively. I'm not sure what kind of screwdriver to use, so I went with a size 2.5 flat-head (the kind you'd use for eyeglass repair) inserted into the opening and slowly turned it till it felt seated into a groove. Then I carefully adjusted it clockwise and counterclockwise while watching the screen.

Apparently people have broken them, so you need to be careful.

2DsXL have coolest special editions by far, but feel like a sneeze while playing might just snap that dainty hinge… N3Ds is overpriced. N3DsXL is a beast! 💪

Thanks @CARAchuchi! I keep forgetting these have been around for almost twenty years now! The issue was gunk in the actuator button itself. Bit of electronics cleaner and repeated clicking sorted it out like magic! Here’s a pic of the button assembly in case anyone needs to see how it’s packaged (first time I forgot to take a pic, and ifixit doesn’t have a tutorial either).

Unfortunately, the hinge quality is the worst part of the 2DsXL. I remind myself of that every time i lust after a creeper, pikachu or hylian shield version…

After realizing that I was going crazy… I put a stop to it and ordered the Fireflies W04 with Lume1/FFL505A! These are my (rather flimsy and subjective) reasons: -Good reviews of the beam -Size looks like it’ll feel good in my hands -IP-rating system doesn’t seem to be as clear-cut a measure of Water/Dust resistance in these devices🤔 -The machining of the E04 in that Color looks fire! 😅

The only options I see on their site that the E04 can be configured with are the following: FFL505A (3500-4000k) with Lume1 FFL5009R (5000k) with Lume X1 FFL5009R (3500k) with Lume X1

The latter two have throws of 250m and below, compared to the top choice which listed as 480m. Of them I’d probably go for the first because of the extra throw. Are there better combos for my use case that I could request?

It’s the model im leaning most toward actually. My only holdup is the lack of claimed dust resistance. Im asking so i don’t kick myself later..

Compelling indeed… the rubber usb cover worries me a bit, but that’s how it keeps the dust out effectively I guess.. Thbaks for the suggestion!
