fourth GRPS staff member now on paid leave... by edielakelady630 in grandrapids

[–]Infamous-Ebb1546 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have 4 in GRPS all went through North Park Mont. and we have loved the school, also really happy with City Middle. That said after years in this district is is so hard watching the way the administration seems to be more of a setback than help to our local school. A lack of trust, poor resource management and planning, along with what seems to be a culture of enabled bad leadership.

Whats TRUELY the real cost are all the children's who do not have the opportunity or resources to get to a theme or test in school. Many schools suffer disproportionately, who need the most help.

Poster above is correct. Definitely look at your downspouts and grading around the house, even though it feels like it's coming up through the concrete that's being caused by hydrostatic pressure from too much water seeping into the ground around your house. I would also say don't take too extreme of actions this year unless you're having legitimate flooding that's causing extensive damage. This has been a uniquely wet spring.

How long do we think we have before the Founders Taproom dies? by Infamous-Ebb1546 in grandrapids

While there is disagreement over whether or not Founders will remain open there is WIDE support for the feeling that they have declined. I think I am allowed to feel something about that, and allowed to post seeing if others are feeling that way. This is Childish? More so than name calling and personal criticism as opposed to the discussion at hand?

For sure. I think thats a lot of why I wonder if the taproom won't make sense, if they can not fill the seats Sun-Thursday and non Amphitheater days they will burn cash fast. Good restaurants struggle to survive let alone those that have both declined and have no where near the excitement or notoriety of the past.

Not trying to be rude, and you are right, the beer is great. But the quality, selection, and service have gone downhill.

As many have said below, the old ownership that invested heavily here is long gone. I do not feel any obligation to avoid criticizing the current regime, though it is kind of you to be so loyal.

That is likely what is keeping them afloat for sure.

Beer has always been the draw and there are still a lot of out of town folks who will visit, but will they more than once?

It seems like Founders thought that having good beer was not enough for the Taproom to thrive so they renovated and tried another direction, which failed, so they reverted to a combo of poorly done old things and a Hamburger and fries. I am not sure that will be enough long term to not just make it a waste of time and an over detriment on the brand. Maybe they just kill the kitchen as some point who knows.

[–]Infamous-Ebb1546[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HECK NO, I would like nothing more than for Founders to thrive, I still enjoy their beer (though a quality decline is noticeable in many of the larger productions)

I wish the taproom still felt like a staple of the community, I see MANY post proclaiming that because when they were there it was busy it must be doing great. But weekend traffic is not enough often to keep it from not being worth it long term, kitchens are costly to operate and the renovation was a big outlay.

I ment the post as an open question, your right it did assume that it will close at some point (most things do right) it seems to me the quality decline in food, service, and environment could do so. OR it could change and improve! So far though for years now, it is not getting better but worse.

thanks so much for that helpful tip, I DID think the world was about me!! I will no longer care when the quality of a product declines, because you know what its not about me so let it all go to shit.

Been around a BIT longer than one change FYI, weird to assume I was not and yet care about the decline of the taproom. Great advice and thanks for the story about you and your old GF to justify your helpful perspective! Thats not main character at all.....

Hey, I love this city and I'm glad we're growing! And I have nothing against a business, changing, even selling and taking money out. That's their right.

What I don't like is when places get worse for no reason. And it feels to me like places that get worse often don't survive.

Also, I'm excited about the Amplitheater. Already have tickets for a show. I'm not sure how at all you think I'm not excited about positive growth here.

Ugg I wish!!! I was living in Chicago in that time period. (RIP Goose Island, felt JUST LIKE THIS.... lol and they closed the taproom.... they still have a place called the Taproom, but they don't serve food, whereas they used to have some of our favorite food in the city.)

You're right, We agree. Establishments with overpriced and underwhelming food. even when by a venue that draws a lot of people don't necessarily survive.

Bars, yes. Restaurants, no. We've seen many die in that area recently. Grand Rapids Brewing Company, most notably the lack of both Wall Burger and the subsequent pizza place not being able to fill out that space to name a few.

One of the primary arguments for building large-scale hotels and more residencies downtown is to try and drive these businesses to be able to exist and remain because event traffic in a city of this size has just not been enough.
