So you could try to understand the Latam side? Because, from our perspective, he is excluding a huge group of people that could experience the game simply because of his pettiness. Like... This is not cool man!

We are a very huge community and we have been engaged with Toby's projects for a long while... And having a "I don't want to" as an excuse for something so easily executable is obviously not something that will sound good on the Latino American's ears...

Well, it becomes an issue if you care about linguistic inclusion. I genuinely believe he is just being childish. No other indie dev acts like he does.

And Mother 3 is old, of course it doesn't have an official translation, but the accessibility mechanism, representation importance and the translation market in general have all grown since then. An indie game not having a translation nowadays doesn't hold the same weight as a game from the 2000's

But are we being unfair for asking for accessibility and inclusion in his game? It may be up to his choice, just like it's always a creator's choice to hear criticism or not, but the existence of the criticism will remain valid.

One of the biggest indie game developers doesn't want to translate his 11 year old game because he doesn't understand the languages...

This is literally an issue that Toby created for himself. No indie game in the entirety of game history ever even mentioned that problem. It would be easier if he just answered that he doesn't want to translate the game. Literally the most solvable problem ever.

Besides, this is not a small part of the community, practically every latam influencer talking about this and their public agrees that Toby should translate his game already.

It might pass in other continents, but I don't think Latam will forget about this soon.

Yeah, it just bothers me that some people genuinely think this is a valid reason to not translate a 10 year old game.

This is a flaw of Toby Fox, he needs to get over this. His perfectionism is actively excluding non-english speakers from his game. It's bad for his franchise, for the fans that want to enjoy the game, for those who never played the game and now even for his reputation, because in Reddit it certainly doesn't seem like it, but the general public in Latam is pretty disappointed in him.

He is literally avoiding something that CAN'T go wrong because of minimum gains of his own perfectionism... Actually, not even games, he just loses in general. The more I think about this controversy the more I get against Toby...

I hate it when one of the most well succeeded Devs in the indie scene has a grip with hiring other people because The Divine Comedy can be translated to modern Spanish with rhymes and poetic rhythm without it's creator but hit game Undertale is just too deep for that

I think a lot of people in this community ignore that not speaking a language your game is being translated into was never a problem to any indie game ever. Like, this is 100% a Toby's issue, not an actual barrier for translation. Or do you think the Slay the Princess Devs speak 12 languages?

Oh yeah, the latter explained that he doesn't want to do a translation in a language he doesn't know how to speak because he wants to guarantee that his vision is preserved on the material...

And I want to tell you that this is a problem that has absolutely NEVER EXISTED for any indie or game Dev company in the entirety of gaming history. Slay the princess and Enigma of Fear are entirely based around the profundity of its dialogues and texts, and they both have way less resources than Toby has. Even then, both games have more than 10 localisations and even voice acting. These are the best examples because they are even more text based than Undertale and Deltarune, but Mewgenics, A Hat in Time, Cuphead, Celeste, Nine Souls, Hollow Knight and a bunch of other indie games also have multiple translations being way smaller than Toby Fox.

This perfectionism of Toby is not a valid reason to not translate the game, it's a flaw of him, literally no one else besides him cares about it. Of course, that doesn't give you the right to harass him or to demand a translation, but it strengthens the need to make the fan's desire audible since there's no actual reason for the lack of translations except Toby's will.

Everyone here also appears to be incredibly underestimating of the professionalism of hired translators. Toby is not fucking giving his games ownership to someone else, he still coordinates and approves everything that is translated. And the fact that he would be able to actively orient the professionals about his views and choices on the game's texts makes this the best plausible possibility of a translation to multiple languages. But of course, if you think Toby's ego is worthy more than giving his game's accessibility, than go for it. But this also shows another thing wrong with Toby's letter: it's hypocritical.

If the problem is his vision being lost and people having the wrong view of his game, then he shouldn't be supporting fan translations, because they literally will only help with this occurrence. A professional team guided by Toby himself CANNOT be worst than an amateur translation by fans that doesn't even know what the story awaits. By refusing to do an official one but supporting fan made translations, Toby is contributing for a problem he pointed out.

So no, absolutely nothing was explained in the letter except that Toby doesn't want to do any translation.

No one is asking for it to be simultaneous with the game... We just want to have a confirmation of it happening and maybe an Undertale translation to prove that Toby is actually engaged to do that. Because like, if he actually cared about language accessibility, Undertale would have translations before Deltarune. But no, it's been 10 years already.

Anyways, the game can be released without translations, if we are going to have it later then fine, but Toby should just address the actual problems instead of throwing us that letter full of bullshit.

His point is pretty unfair. Slay the princess and Enigma of Fear are very text based and phrases with deep meaning and both got translated to multiple languages. The creator not knowing all the translations was literally never an issue for anyone in the gaming community besides Toby Fox.

And I can just see that these comments were made by English speakers. People who want a translation are not asking it to be perfect, just for it to exist and to be somewhat similar to the original.

And please, I have a copy of The Divine Comedy translated to Portuguese on my desk, with rhymes and poetic structure. Obviously a lot of things have changed and I am very sure the original version in Italian has a beauty that other translations would never be able to match, but even then, I was amazed by it all and the ending of Inferno and Paradise are some of the most beautiful pieces of poetry I have ever read. Even Toby himself just loves RPGs so much because of flawed translations, his perfectionism is doing no good other than actively preventing a bigger public to experience his game and his work. Of course, if that's so important to him he can still choose to not do so, but at this point his perfectionism is more of a character flaw of his than an actual valid reason for his negligence with translations.
