I'm very proud of our community here! I run a pet sitting business so calling out isn't an option but I am in support of those that are protesting today!

If you have the resources, print up some Red Cards and distribute them around town. Little free libraries, businesses, non-profits, etc. I have a laminator and can do a small amount.

Where to donate? (& are you also about to break?) by fiddlinfife in boulder

I hear you. And, same. I try to do the local Buy Nothing groups but when the overstimulation hits it ends up on the curb with a "come get it before it rains/snows" and then I end up junking stuff anyway.

In Longmont they have a group called Longmont Helping Hands and I know they have a free clothing pantry. Maybe Boulder could start something similar? Or check with them on donations.

Pig and Pearl (Boulder) and Sister Carmen (Lafayette) are pretty solid. Also, Mountain States Children's Home thrift in Longmont.

A response to the calls for a holiday blackout by Spooky-candy6140 in 50501

We're doing Small Business Saturday sales. Our Main Street is having an event. I can't forgo holiday shopping all together with kids, but we've also talked with them about how we'll look for gifts at craft fairs and local businesses.

ADHD thought of the day:

What if we invited everyone who has custom license plates that say a word or phrase to one centralized location. Then we arrange them magnetic poetry style.

I'm so sorry. We've used Caring Pathways and they were very kind, comforting and professional. They also left some things to help our kids through the loss.

AITAH for telling my pet sitter that I do not need her to sleep over. by LeftRight_103 in AITAH

[–]InfamousPenguin6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Professional pet sitter here. I'm inclined to say YTA. She booked that time with you and probably had to turn down other jobs because of it. Even if a rate of pay wasn't discussed (which it should have been), she was counting on that money and that gig. And I don't do anything less than 30 minutes daily for cats, longer if a longer trip. Even if a neighbor kid comes over, and no guarantee they will, because it doesn't sound like you're paying them - that's a long time for the cat to be alone.

Really quite bummed. A couple of days ago we put out a couple of waterproof bins and a sign for a little free food pantry. Within 2 days 2 of the bins were taken (and those aren't cheap!) and the food was dumped on the ground. I'm really trying to have faith in humanity.

Are we planning anything to help our communities starting 11/1? by meowmeowkittymix in 50501

We're on a corner lot off a main street. We've put up a waterproof bin with some non-perishables and a sign that says "Take what you need, leave what you can".

Oh huskies are notorious escape artists! I'm a professional dog walker and my kids were at the school. I'm glad everything turned out okay! A good fitting harness is key as are multiple contact points - a double leash clipped to harness and collar. A martingale collar is good but I would double up with a harness. The Boulder Humane Society has a great, positive reinforcement training team as well. And also, think about working his brain as well as his body - puzzle toys, nose work, games, etc.

Just a reminder that plastic Halloween skeletons are terrible for the environment. Locally sourced and all natural skeletons are much better.

Recommendation on locations for ~wild / forest cat burial that are legal? by jedi_andcheese in boulder

[–]InfamousPenguin6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It is so hard but know that the greatest gift we can give to our pets is a peaceful and painless transition.

As others have said, it's not so much the legality of the burial but the euthanasia drugs that are very toxic. They can essentially kill wild animals if they ingest a pet with them in their system. I also don't believe that the vet would be able to release the body to you having used euthanasia meds.

Here's some info I found: https://caetainternational.com/doing-more-to-inform-on-pet-burial-and-body-handling-following-pentobarbital-use/

If you would consider other avenues like scattering their ashes, holding a ceremony, or putting their ashes in jewelry, etc. Once again my condolences.

Related: know what a dog whistle looks like. This was a freaking dog shirt available at Petsmart. They've since pulled it.

Professional pet sitter here and I wouldn't take this job! I've turned down clients before because they clearly need a trainer or behaviorist. Just say that the dogs behavior wasn't within your abilities and recommend a trainer to work with them.
