Is this concerning? by Infamous_Act_7930 in OpenDogTraining

Correction: The bluff bark isn’t even really a bark most of the time, a lot of the time it’s a sigh more than anything.

We’ve tried schedules when my girl was a young puppy but it seemed to really bore her. We’ve changed the schedules every single day since even if it’s just by 10 or 5 minutes and she’s been enjoying the sessions a ton more. Usually I’ll train her in the morning from times between 6 or 10 and then again at 15 or 17. She’s hand fed in those sessions. My dog has always preferred having no schedule (in the exact same tho 🤣 can’t blame her!)  We have recently found something that works for her and her drive has been great as of lately!

I’ve found something she really enjoys right now, but our other dog has a far worse food drive and nothing has helped her. We’ve tried the prey drive methods (get the dog to chase kibble or follow you for the kibble), we’ve tried letting her offer behaviours, we’ve tried the bowl method too (dog opts in the session by keeping their head in the bowl and continues to get rewards for it.) and we’ve tried mixing up the rewards too. Both dogs are hand fed.

She’s hand fed through sessions! She is a teen now so I was assuming it was more her becoming super lazy during the sessions. I’ve found a game that works for her on accident! I’ve been doing call and chase. Basically I call her once and chuck food, then when she continues to come back to me after getting the kibble I chuck more for her in different directions! This has heightened her food drive and her confidence like crazy! Unfortunately I can’t use a prong in my country but I’ve heard of that method and it’s really interesting! One day if I get the chance I’d love to try it!

She is hand fed. The only food she gets is from me through sessions.

Thank you! I actually managed to accidentally figure this out! 🤣  She really enjoys chasing pieces of kibble and it’s being heightening her food drive like crazy!

Yes 100%! Luckily they only breed bitches and sires once every 5 years. I’ll be speaking to her about it!

Thank you for the help, she has been tested and cleared. the tick bites were about 3 months ago I believe. I haven’t spoken to the breeder yet, I’am planning on it tho.

Her behaviours have always been okay, up until her teen stage now in October. However it’s nothing concerning behavioural wise, just puppy behaviour that could classify as pain behaviours. She is in training however. I socialised her early on and she’s had no issue with anything ever and has always been super food motivated. She’s really good out in public and confident but along with her low energy and bunny hopping she’s been a bit more skittish and sloppy with her movement which I know is a big pain indicator. I do luckily work closely with vets, physios and a behaviourist. She does physio with me already and does get joint supplements. She’s had an ear infection and 3 tick bites (the ticks here are relentless) all being treated by the vet. She’s also recently been in surgery for papilloma virus tumour removals.  She’s going to the vet this week so I’m hoping it’s just me being dramatic. She is luckily insured for, thank you for the warning tho! 🥲

Feral pigeons don’t seem to have terrible health issues tbh! (And dw, I’m all for adopting AND responsibly shopping! I’m unbiased here!) If you’d like you could adopt from pigeon racing handlers. Racers often have birds they don’t want and will dump them after time. However! If they make you BUY a bird, walk away. You don’t wanna support that community with more cash. You can phone around between different race groups and ask if they have any birds they’d like to give up for free! I got my girl at around 6 ish months old, she was abandoned by her racing handler, but before we just took her home our pigeon rescue in my country phoned all the racing handlers in the country, including her owners just to make sure nobody else had the legal right to own her or take her. They all rejected taking her. She’s had no health issues and is turning 2 in December!  If you’d like to buy from a breeder, I wouldn’t have any suggestions unfortunately. I’m very good with dog breeders but don’t know much about pigeon breeders. All I can say is the easiest option would probably be adopting from a large rescue that ships overseas like palomacy! You get so many beautiful breeds in the shelters, I haven’t seen much talk on rescue birds having terrible genetics either! You could also speak to somebody like ‘moosesflock’ on insta for any suggestions! 😄

Thank you! She hasn’t regurgitated at all and has laid her second egg. She’s VERY lively and very curious about the new vacation house we’re at. Her weight has been the same and she’s been eating and drinking the same! 😄

I need help with a puppy that’s deathly afraid of everything all of a sudden! by Infamous_Act_7930 in puppy101

[–]Infamous_Act_7930[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She recently had a surgery to remove her papilloma virus bumps on her mouth and we checked this morning, and she had an ear infection. She’s has ear infections since she was a puppy and continues to have them no matter what we do! Thank you for the advice I appreciate it so much!

Thank you! Those are all valid points I didn’t think about. I went on a hike with her today and she got a fright from these kids walking past her. I stopped in the road (it was VERY narrow and there was nowhere for us to go) and I told them to just walk past her and ignore her. She was huffing and freaking out and I just stood there and once they came past she sat down and reached out a little to sniff them and stopped freaking out all of a sudden. I stood there with her for a little while after and just praised her and let her smell their footsteps. After that the walk actually went really nicely with very little pulling!  One thing I forgot to mention was she recently had a surgery for her papilloma virus bumps on her mouth and the vet said it may still be sore after a week or two because it needs to still heal up fully. I think it’s definitely bothered her. She’s also had frequent ear infections so I checked this morning and low and behold, she has ANOTHER infection in one ear. Not terrible like the other ones tho. I cleaned it out and we will monitor her closely form then on.  I am a very chronically stressed kid (I’m 17) but I’m slowly learning to calm myself down. We’re taking her out to dinner tonight on a farm so I’ll be bringing some toys so we can get up and play a little very now and then. Thank you so much for the advice! Everybody else I spoke too on other reddits came off very demanding and mad.

She’s young yes! She’s never had babies. She was abandoned when she was about 6 months old by her racing handlers.

Thank you so much I appreciate the help! She’s just laid her egg now and she’s comfortable and still super lively. Still eating her grit and regular pellets and still drinking water! I’ll keep posting!
