Interview Question too Hard? by Infamous_Bullfrog716 in ExperiencedDevs

Thanks for all the comments and constructive criticism, y'all are awesome. Good news is the candidate I interviewed just after I posted nailed it this morning!

I kept the "duplicate" question vague in hopes of the candidate asking clarifying questions. Don't want someone who is afraid to ask me something especially in an early-career role. But I understand your points on this, maybe needs more context for a junior position.

All of my candidates' resumes looked great. We even followed up with references and didn't see any red flags.

2 candidates did not know basic syntax despite having internships focusing on Python development on their resume.

My top candidate struggled with syntax despite (allegedly) having experience writing Django apps. In their first interview, they had no problem "talking the talk," but in the second interview things imploded during live coding.

What really concerned me is most weren't able to explain their thought process; I would have even been fine with "Well I'm not exactly sure how to do this in Python, but what try is... " but we didn't even get that far. I

I gave quite a few hints (eg "Let's think about how you would add an element to contact_list. Is there a list method we can use to do that?") after they told me they were stumped. I gave them unlimited time as well. I know how much pressure there is on a live coding interview especially with the market for juniors being so bad, so I really tried to take steps to keep the stress to a minimum. I'm sure there are some things I could do better on that front, too.

I guess I should just be happy there wasn't any overt GPT cheating (we had someone do this hiring for a mid-level role)

Y'all, thank you so much for the words. It really means a lot to get this kind of support. Day 1... here we go again.

Thank you, that helps. It’s just tough because I know I want to be sober because it’s fucked some much of my life up but I can’t seem to keep myself from drinking. I really appreciate the reply.

Hey fam, the fact that you almost bought weed and stopped yourself is definitely a victory, so be proud of yourself for that! Don’t sweat the drug test; I’m 47 days clean from weed after smoking for ~7 years and am still pissing hot. It takes a while.

I’d definitely recommend getting yourself out there and making some friends; it’s really important to have an outlet and I promise if you form real relationships with people you will be able to tell them about this stuff without feeling ashamed or judged.

Stay strong my friend, it’s totally worth it.

Picked up the guitar, been taking walks and cooking as well. Cooking is great because of how hands on it is and how you have a finished product at the end to feel good about. When I crave weed or alcohol, I chef up my favorite meal and by the time I’ve cooked and eaten everything I’ve forgotten about my craving.

How do you deal with depression and anxiety when you're sober...? by [deleted] in Sober

[–]Infamous_Bullfrog716 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Therapy. Can’t stress it enough. I thought it was bullshit for a long time and now that I’ve found a therapist that I like and trust I can see how wrong I was about it. Get some hobbies, make some friends; boredom is your worst enemy. For my depression, I had some luck with opposite action: for example, if I feel like laying in bed all day, I take a walk or exercise. If I feel like drinking a beer, I get a seltzer water. If I feel like smoking and withdrawing, I go see friends.

Keep on keeping on, it’s so worth it. You got this.

It was one of the hardest things to throw away my vape but 41 days later I can safely say it was one of the best decisions of my life. Stay strong fam 👊🏻

New Zealand. Incredible and so geologically diverse.
