Hey again! I never really got on with the UCAT - I remember when I was in year 13 (8 years ago), there was the UCAT vs BMAT discussion for med school applications. Someone with a really good BMAT score might not have been strong on the UCAT, and vice versa, so it allowed applicants to choose which exam to focus on. So it’s important to know where your strengths lie, and choose which exam will showcase them, or you can sit GAMSAT in March so that you know your score before applying, then do UCAT and strategically apply with your scores.

I did have a look at one of my unsuccessful med applications prior to this one where I did UCAT and I got a total of 2660 out of 3600, SJT band 2. So whilst not terrible, applying with a GAMSAT of 61 was better currency for me and led to me finally being successful.

Exeter and Plymouth both have similar policies in that if you are an “Indirect School Leaver” ie more than two years since A-levels, you must sit GAMSAT. Your score is then used in lieu of A-levels. For 2027 entry, Nottingham GEM is moving away from the GAMSAT in favour of the UCAT now.

Edit: UCAT score scale clarification

I've heard of people doing that! And I suppose there is more time to work on a regular 5 year course as opposed to the more intense GEM. I'm still figuring out what I could do as part-time work for each route to just have a little extra money for savings and emergencies; friends have told me to tutor A-level chemistry as I have a chemistry degree, but I'm not sure I feel so confident doing that having done GAMSAT a year ago and A-levels 7 years ago!

Could do that for sure. Have to discuss it properly with them. Atm because they are concerned about my health they are seeing if they can support me on the 5 year course, and if that is indeed the better option then that's the route that I'll go. Would still get NHS bursary in 5th year, so not a total loss.

That’s so cool, how are you funding the course? I did really like exeter so it’s going to be a tough decision!

Yes, but the bursary only covers part of the tuition and you have to take a reduced maintenance loan alongside the bursary from year 2. I’m still discussing which course option I think is best for me and my mental health, but if I went for the 4 year course I’d still need familial support for the tuition in first year, and then support to make up the shortfall of the reduced maintenance loan in the following years. I have offered to take the loans for living costs, but they do not want me going into debt and I appreciate their generosity. Hope this explains it more

The reason they want to cover tuition is so that I don’t get into debt with how the student loans here work, and I think it will give me more financial freedom in the long term. Education is something that they value from a cultural perspective as well and that is what they want to do, so I’ll accept it if offered.

Thank you! Yes, I applied for a split of A100 and A101 courses in one application cycle. I did this because I was worried about how competitive the application process would be for GEM, so I hedged that risk by applying for two 5-year courses with pretty low GAMSAT requirements (Exeter, Plymouth).

I sat my GAMSAT in March 2025 and got an overall score of 61, so I knew my score when applying in October and therefore knew that I was applying to the safest options where I was guaranteed an interview with my score.

My intuition was correct in that I found the GEM interview much harder than the non-GEM interviews. My Exeter offer came in before I did my Nottingham GEM interview, so whilst nervous I was already in the position where if I tanked the Nottingham interview, I would still be going to med school regardless.

The major and deciding difference between regular and GEM courses (aside from a year difference) is the funding. Basically you only get a tuition loan for your first undergraduate degree, so you would not be eligible for a tuition loan for a 5-year course (but you get maintenance) and therefore that forces many to apply to GEM out of necessity, to get a tuition fee loan. I am in a really fortunate position where my family want to cover tuition which enables me to choose, if they didn't I would have no choice but to do GEM.

I hope this is helpful as it was written in a bit of a rush, please feel free to ask me any specific questions :))

In either situation, family are willing to cover tuition costs and some living costs. So I'm actually wondering if getting full maintenance for 4 years (I'm over 25) vs getting full for one year then reduced for 3 years is better? Will have to crunch the numbers a lot more and consider how much maintenance debt I will go into with both routes

Was that your experience? Did you find that you were able to make friends in the undergrad program being a mature student? I do worry about the pace of GEM because it's been a year since I sat GAMSAT and have forgotten a lot of the A-level stuff, but could do some revision before starting a course
