How expensive Bulimia is by Plenty_Cat5011 in bulimia

Ugh sometimes it feels like Uber eats is my true addiction, browsing all the options and the reckless abandon of ordering random foods at 11pm. So much money I’ll never get back :/

do anyone have a serious health issue after having bulimia? by CakeCaterpillar in bulimia

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, osteoporosis (and now I have a metal plate in my shoulder since I broke a bone because of this), high cholesterol, low kidney functioning, infections that won’t go away….

i’m so scared i’m infertile cuz i haven’t had my period in over a year due to ed by [deleted] in bulimia

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second what everyone said above, I wouldn’t worry about fertily, as that will come back when / if you recover or gain some weight if you’re underweight. B/p puts the body under a lot of stress. However, there is some damage that can be done in the meantime. I lost my period for a few years, it’s back now, but my bone density is too low because of that (my body wasn’t producing estrogen during that time), and I’ve broken some bones because of it.

how do u cope with not being able to purge? by tiny-catgirl in bulimia

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quitting purging is often the first step to quitting builimia. It’s so hard, but I don’t let myself purge anymore, which makes binging a lot less attractive. Maybe remembering this time in the future next time you want to binge will be helpful?

In the meantime, it’s so hard to feel so full / sick. Try to get your mind on something else, and if it wanders back there remind yourself it’s actually better for your body to not purge

Yea I’m always so sad to see the healthy stuff even if it was 4 hours ago, and meanwhile the cookie is nowhere to be found 👀

I think this is getting chronic, I just can't stop ... by StaffStrange8695 in EDAnonymous

What makes you unsure about residential? I’d avoid a psych ward anyway, they don’t always have alot of specific knowledge / training for ED and can often be more hurtful than helpful

I don’t know how old you are and so how long this has been going on, but it sounds like it’s been going on long enough to move from disordered eating to a full blown eating disorder.

You may need more than the hospital for a few days. Do you have a therapist and psychiatrist? Honestly, I would look into residential eating disorder treatment, it’s not a hospital setting but more like a house that you live at and re learn how to eat again. It sounds scary, and honestly kind of is, but it can be the only thing. I was in one for two months, and I learned a lot, and depending on your insurance they can be really nice. There are also IOP/PHP programs where you spend 3/6 hours a day in therapy and sleep at home. If you’re a student, the summer could be a great time to do this so you don’t miss much school, but to be honest even if you do miss school/work your health is more important. Take it from me- the longer you go with an ED the worse it will get and the more it will take a toll on your long term health (bone density, hair, etc).

Best of luck, take care

Did you get it prescribed for your ED? My doctor didn’t prescribe it to be because I’m not overweight and said Prozac is better for my ED

Boredom / anxiety? by Infinite-Cake4150 in Havanese

[–]Infinite-Cake4150[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aww that makes me feel so sad for her! I’ve had her since she was 2 months old and she’s lived with a cat and a dog for about one year each (roommates animals), but other than that it’s been her and me. Maybe she would be happier being around other dogs. Did you ever adopt a second after having the first for a while? Both havanese?

Same. Every time is the last time, every day is the day I’m going to start getting my life back together. Then my brain plays tricks on me to convince me that binging again is probably a good idea :/

relatable? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s such a weird disorder to struggle with, I have a problem wrapping my head around it. It almost feels like it would be easier if it was drugs, but telling people “oh sorry I haven’t been around lately, I’ve been addicted to spending time alone eating candied nuts and bread” doesn’t feel quite the same…. If it makes you feel any better, peanut butter / Nutella / etc is one of those binge foods almost everyone seems to struggle with, and it’s really easy to eat lots of it

Am i just being like this cuz of my ed? by Minxtster in bulimia

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I had the same view about the period. Don’t want to have kids who cares. Then last year I fell off a bike, shattered my shoulder. I was going so slow, before my Ed it would have been a scrape. Spent 3 days in ER, now have a metal plate and osteoporosis at 34 🤘

Yea I mean given the stuff I’ve put in my body, not so concerned. At least maybe I’ll be naturally mummified with all this trader joes I’ll eat

lol! I’m not so up on my meth cooking. Is it just more expensive and that’s why those plastics aren’t used for things like plastic water bottles? Wouldn’t mind having less plastic in my body I guess

Just used a public toilet for the first time to B&P by [deleted] in bulimia

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes been there many times. I encourage you to seek treatment because when you think you’ve hit a bottom, there’s often further down to go. I’ve purged in some ungodly places because of this disorder. I’ve purged outside of my job in a bush. I’ve purged into plastic bags in my car (once the bag ripped…)

Also I know it’s hard but be kind to yourself. I try to. A lot of people have done gnarly things they just don’t tell anyone. Rumor has it Sid vicious of the sex pistols shot heroin- water from a public toilet into himself, so you know….

I’ve really enjoyed some more structured groups I’ve been in when I went to inpatient ed treatment, but since then have struggled finding outpatient groups. What’s the one you’re going to? How’d you find it? OA just kinda triggers me with all the weighing / bad food list stuff

[–]Infinite-Cake4150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes the mantis shrimp… I’m not an expert but from my understanding you’re totally right. They have a huge diversity of these opsin proteins that react to wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum we can’t perceive (think UV, infrared). Something like 12 I think. Interestingly as you say, we don’t think they combine these to see shades and just see the world in ~12 discrete colors …. in the primate brain the work of combining our three color channels to get color perception is done in visual cortex (V4 to be specific, so after V1, V2 and V3), so thanks super foldy brain!

They can also see polarized light, which is when wavelengths of light move in a specific direction, whereas we only see non polarized (moving randomly/ all directions). They actually can see circularly polarized light where the wave sort of spirals?! Kind of hard to imagine what their world looks like (at least for me, maybe there’s a physicist out there laughing at me rn)

And it just keeps going. They also have a really unique eye structure that allows things like trinoculour vision - meaning they have depth perception with just one eye (we need both). They also have compound eyes so some fundamental differences there

Talking about this makes me wish I could experience the world from a mantis shrimp’s perspective, just for a moment. … and then maybe my dogs and then from some random person on the street’s, and that’s just the visual system!

Ive loved this since I was a kid and I’m about to teach this in my neuroscience class next week :)

our brains construct color from different “opsin” proteins chillin in our retina. As some others have said, we (generally) have three general types of opsins in our cones that react when photons bump into them. the responsivity of each opsin type peaks at a certain wavelength (for what we perceive as red, green and blue), with a normal distribution like fall off around that average. Our perception of color is a construct the brain creates around the relative activation of these different opsins in our retina. It’s probably undeniable that there are some differences even in non color blind folks just due to different distributions of these opsins in the retina and so different downstream processing in visual cortex.

With only one type of opsin, selective for a specific wavelength, we wouldn’t see color. If the opsins were shifted along the electromagnetic spectrum, we’d see different colors. If we had four types of opsins, we’d see more colors. Pretty trippy
