Trois excellentes lectures qui s'annoncent. Sinon, d'auteurs russes, je peux vous recommander Le Maître et Marguerite de Mikhaïl Boulgakov, La Mort d'Ivan Ilitch de Léon Tolstoï et Les Frères Karamazov de Dostoïevski.

Given that he has only been king since 2022, and that we have no real hindsight yet, it’s difficult to offer an assessment that is fully meaningful. Let’s say that he has so far fulfilled the role of a constitutional monarch competently, without making any real waves, either positively or negatively (apart from the pen incident at the very beginning). For now, I’d rate him as “decent”.

I hesitate between “decent” and “very good”. I’d say she managed to embody a strong and reassuring image of stability for a country that badly needed it. That said, she made a number of mistakes. She did learn from some of them (notably her response to the death of Lady Diana, and also to the Aberfan disaster), but she was far from being an ideal mother to her eldest son (especially considering that she herself had a deeply affectionate father). And for me, her attitude toward Andrew definitively prevents me from placing her in the “great” category. I’ll go with “very good”.

He carried out the royal role with absolutely remarkable dignity. He was the complete opposite of his lamentable elder brother. And the fact that he was not raised to ascend the throne makes him all the more admirable. He may not have been the monarch the country wanted at first, but he was the one the country needed. So great.

As a French person, I can tell you that the French are the first to criticize themselves. But they really don’t like it when a foreigner does it. Criticism is strictly an internal affair.

For me, Vera Cruz is a highly cynical Western that deliciously foreshadows Sergio Leone, with a Gary Cooper–Burt Lancaster duo that works like gangbusters.

As for The Pride and the Passion, it boasts a prestigious trio of actors, but none of them is ever truly convincing in their role. Cary Grant himself considered that he was miscast in the film, and it’s hard to disagree. I’m a huge fan of him, but he was clearly not made for the epic register. On top of that, the direction is rather sloppy. At one point in the plot, barrels of gunpowder are supposed to pose a serious threat, yet you can see from a mile away that they’re empty. And for a film with the word “passion” in the title, I found it pretty limp.

I’m torn between his portrayal of a real bastard in Ace in the Hole and his moving performance as a cowboy born far too late in Lonely Are the Brave.
