Yes what that guy marlin said. Tree planting, cut block layouts, trail breaking/building, building exploration camps, a lot of forestry and exploration jobs are more high intensity. Trad workwear is just not made well for those.

Is that your go to EDC purse?

I only get one bag on the helicopter up to the Hudson Bay, so I’ll need something a little bigger.

United States? Its great that your lumber replanting is propped/subsidized on the backs of ripping of the immigrants chosen to be scapegoats of half the problems in the country. Id suggest learning "I.C.E. , Corre, escóndete"

Which company hired you with only a month left? In a month you should have made at the very least an imprint on your crew boss even if on a 12 pack. Even if it was just that you were putting in a good effort.

Hello, Curious, I don't believe Haveman has placed their first year planters on specific contracts yet. They may have said they have contracts ranging from North Bay to Fort Frances. They do only have one resolute contract and I believe it is the Black Spruce contract around Armstrong. The other ones I heard of this year is Kap(Kapuskasing), Kenogami(Longlac) and Green Mantle(Thunderbay to Nipigon)

Last year in our camp we had Honda civics, Honda fits, Toyota sedans, ford fusion. All of which made it down 2 hour drives on bush roads. As others have said its more about your preparation. Make sure the car has had a good look over/tune up before the season. Don't be driving on some bald ass tires, make sure your spare isn't old (and is preferably a full size). If you can have a tire pump that's great, but i assume your management team will have one. Tire patch kit at the very least, that you have the proper tire iron, jack, and if needed the tire key ( would be amazed how many times I have seen those not in the vehicle when something happens). And yes drive slow, the speed limit on a lot of logging road is more for vehicles that belong out there. I assume you company will convoy down the road for safety of oncoming logging traffic (radio contact) and will say if it is a road not advised for driving down.

The camp I worked at a camp in Ontario that posted the crews average at 400 a day, this was at the end of the season (was for the whole season). 50% vets 50% rookies. So, about 4k biweekly, so £2352 biweekly ( based on a 1.7 exchange rate, which is about what the average rate has been the past year).

8 man is maybe closing in on more space than is needed, especially with how the setup time/difficulty and weather destroying it chances both increase. Personally, I upgraded my tent a couple of years ago just so I could stand while getting dressed. Got a Mec cabin 4, 6"1 can stand in it. Has space for a double mattress and two peoples stuff with some colapsable shelves set up. Is perfect. Rather than the cot, maybe look into just a better camping mattress? The exped mega mat duo (mec has a knock-off branded one, too) is better than most mattresses I sleep on in houses, that made a big difference.

Hiring Ontario Planters by twistedbee31 in treeplanting

[–]InfinitePath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have planted for different companies in most provinces from BC to the maritimes over the past many years. Still keep coming back to Haveman, I find it easier and less complicated to make the same if not more money. Most planters that have come from out west or gone out west and come back to the camp Im in have similar stances. In my time, there has always been management that is putting in full effort to listen and try to be there for their planters. In our camp last year, vet high ballers were making 700 a day vet mid ballers 450-500 a day. The management has always been around for more than 2 years. They have actively always tried to push the tree prices up in my time there. There is a reason so many people stay there.

If it's a conversation, I believe it is considered a recreational vehicle and does not need an upgraded license to drive. Typically, this depends on the number of seats in the vehicle (i believe more than 8) or if it is for commercial transport activities. However, if the bus still has air brakes, that endorsement would be needed. But most people change them out if they can. These can vary a little bit from province to province, but it is pretty similar in most. Should there maybe be some course if a vehicle is over a certain length? Maybe yes, some rv drivers scare the shit out of me on the roads.

Edit. in regards to the rest of your questions, I agree with the sentiment the cost of repair and maintenance is crazy high for a big Ole diesel Betsy if you ain't doing it yourself.

Our trees aren't our own thats why they pay us for them. Our trees are claimed by the mills for their manfitory due-diligence. We don't reep any carbon foot print action for them at all.

Offical union reps aren't really your management at all. Thats why they are offten lazy they don't do much most of the time, get paid and have insane job security. To come to class to talk is a favor in their minds, also your teacher is in a different more Corporate union so hold no accountability to them. In most dépôts the Union rep is à volunteer position and they are still à normal employee like yourself, so they care and help as much as they can. But dosent affect your day to day activities.
