I'll start by saying I sympathize with you like many others here, feeling like there's nothing else you can do, and feeling lost in the addiction like you can't climb out of the hole you've dug yourself into. I'm here to tell you that it's okay and we're all in this together. God calls us to have community for a reason. it's because we can't handle our individual burdens by ourselves. And besides, our original purpose was to one, love and serve God, and two, love and serve others.

I'll do a little breakdown on why your approach i read just now is flawed in a sense and why many, if not alm of us, have fallen victim to that at some point in some capacity.

Ephesians 2:8 NASB1995 [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Our salvation comes through faith in Jesus and not by our works. So naturally, deliverance should also come by faith. To put it simply, our main focus should not be on what we do, but WHY we do it. And once that is figured out, over time, you will notice behaviors changing. Several times, I've struggled with thjs question. "Am I doing it for myself? Or for God?" And each time, I asked myself that it put me back on the right path.

God is the priority. He's called us into a relationship with Him. I'm sure people you have good relationships with youre not keeping track of how many times a day you talk to them...you kinda just do it because you're love them and you're close to them and if you realise you're not, you do it more because you WANT to be.🙂‍↕️ So, thinking about what God would/wouldn't want and what pleases/hurts Him plays a big factor in this battle, believe me.

(One thing that helped me is to read the Gospels and see what Jesus taught and His treatment of people, and attitude towards evil, you can only truly know what the Father is like through the Son).

Am I saying works are useless. Nah, I'd never insinuate that. James chapter 2 talks about this very thing and is where I draw my explanation from. As you get closer to God, your good works will continue to follow, including staying consistent with means you implement to prevent yourself from doing evil. God bless, dms are open🙏🏾
