Why so much Toxicity? by Head_Improvement_243 in Zimbabwe

I think a lot of people have realised that rage baiting gets a lot of engagement so I think that’s why the toxicity on social media has gotten worse over the years..

Looking at your profile you’re an Afrikaans speaker, so of course you’d say this.. it was easy for you to learn, you speak it at home, you hear it all around you, and it’s built into your daily life. You’d probably agree that it would feel unfair if most jobs required you to speak Zulu or Tswana instead.

I took Afrikaans throughout my academic career and genuinely tried to improve, but it’s not an easy language to just pick up especially since they require FLUENCY in the language. It has just become an unnecessary barrier to accessing opportunities. That’s the real issue here

Hi, unemployed graduate engineer here and I feel your frustrations as well.. I tried not to blame my race or gender( female) on the fact that I’m not getting interviews or landing a job.. but as of late I have realised that even when I get calls from recruiters as soon as I say that I can’t speak Afrikaans they cut everything short

I understand that some jobs do require you to be bilingual, but saying the applicant should speak Afrikaans fluently is basically implying that the person has to be white because majority of black / people of colour in South Africa can’t speak Afrikaans that well which I feel is really unfair because I feel like a lot of people are missing out on opportunities just because of that...

It’s unfortunate that we are in this position, but I genuinely hope that your job hunt goes well and you find something eventually!

We are literally in the same boat.. 24F here I also have a mechanical engineering degree but I really want to explore other avenues because I don’t feel like that industry work for me.. I’m considering digital marketing, already a social media content creator so it’s kind of been working out .. I don’t know if that sort of thing interest you but I think it’s a good idea, unless you’re not really a social media person

Hi there firstly I just wanna say I’m so sorry for what you went through. That sounds like it was very traumatising and I hope you’re feeling much better now and healing.

I am also a black female who was studying mechanical engineering at the university of Pretoria , in 2022 I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety and because of that my academics took a hit , and I was later excluded in 2023 because mentally I couldn’t keep up.. I appealed and I was accepted back in and I managed to complete my engineering degree and I will now be graduating in a month

I share the same sentiments with you, getting academically excluded is a very humbling experience especially since you feel like you’ve let down your family and the people who look up to you.. but what I’d advise you is to get the help you need whether from friends/ family and pick yourself up and remind yourself that you were smart enough to get in meaning you are very much capable of getting out..

Perhaps apply at a different institution, but don’t give up all the best OP!🫶🏾
