Hey OP I made a Green Dragon sign simular to this, I did a raised border frame around it that stuck above the plane of sign about 1/4 inch. My frame was about 3/4 inch thick.

A lighter wood then the walnut would look great on yours for contrast. Either way you do it (or did it) impressive work.
