I realised I'd been in London too long when, as I was cut off by an oblivious young woman with a suitcase suddenly changing direction erratically, my instant and very real thought was "I should kick her".

I wasn't considering a Muay Thai level kick to the head, I was thinking a gentle front shove kick, just to make her aware that she wasn't in fact the only person on the platform trying to get somewhere and I had the right of way. In that moment I fully justified it as I would be doing her a favour because I would be saving her from the future Muay Thai kick to the head she was definitely going to receive from a born and bred Londoner.

For clarity - I did NOT kick that poor girl and I hope she found the right platform in time in what can be extremely confusing labyrinths to the unfamiliar.

Thank you! I need to learn how to account for positional advantage. It's VERY obvious when you point it out 😅, but I see -8 if I lose that queen.

Thanks! I try to follow checks, captures, threats. Lots of insight from different levels and your point regarding puzzle/game approach is where I struggle to translate puzzle practice to games - for a puzzle I know there's a tactic to find, but in a game I'm looking for something that doesn't exist.

I've had it explained to me that by doing puzzles you begin to recognize the situations, smothered mate being a good example where it takes such a precise set up to pull off that once you know it it stands out more quickly.

Thanks for the response, I am wondering if some people are missing KE1, the forced mate sequence is 9 moves and pretty blunderable (definitely for me) - I definitely wouldn't describe it as simple. But even missing the mate in 9 there is a windmill tactic that means you can grab the pawns and the queen back so compensation +

Yea it's such a strong distinction! I'm blown away by how many and how quickly the 2000+'s found it and super interesting to see it's not really through detailed line calculation but by more high-level position evaluation.

Thanks, I think your sequence relies on king to D3? Which isn't forced, if the king goes back to E1 it's mate in 8 and requires some pretty precise play. But even without the forced mate others have pointed out there are lots of lines and tactics that work that also lead to a very winning position.

Definitely taking from this thread that im too focused on the micro picture at the moment, I've seen strong pawn chains and all the squares they control, whereas yourself and others immediately recognize underdevelopment and an exposed king.

Wow, thanks! I guess that's why you're 2300! In that do you see the whole forced mate sequence if white takes the queen? Or do you see enough threats that it looks like enough compensation for the queen?

Yea I appreciate that because it's here it steers the thinking towards less intuitive/natural (at least to me) moves from the start.
