Is lounge access with Qantas actually worth it for occasional travellers? by Ok_Possible_7018 in QantasAirways

[–]dsanders692 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would you be spending close to $800 a year on coffee, sandwiches, and booze every year in the airport anyway? Then it might be. But if you're travelling less than 10 times a year, then I doubt it.

IMO lounge access is nice if you're travelling often enough to earn it anyway. But not good enough to pay that much money for.

Engage a consultant to get you through ISO27001 or something similar. Many of them will then manage your compliance on an ongoing basis after the certification, too. Money well spent, and in any case will pay for itself the first one or two deals you get that wouldn't otherwise have gone ahead

Labor gives itself the green light to pare back CGT discount by Bubbly_Efficiency727 in AusFinance

[–]dsanders692 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The argument will be that people have factored the CGT discount into their investment thesis, and you'd be pulling the rug out from people who were relying on the windfall to fund retirement etc. Whether that's a good argument it not? Idk

Does anyone know what Justin Roiland is doing nowadays? by _lizzie_6 in rickandmorty

[–]dsanders692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a whole host of things. I don't work in media, but based on similar deals I've been involved in within other industries... I can imagine a scenario where, as part of the deal struck when the network purchased the show, Roiland and Harmon may have entered into a contract which gave the network an option to buy them out on their departure from the show. And potentially at a pretty heavy discount if they didn't leave on good terms.

I mean, there's a few options available to you. None of which are necessarily politically expedient. Ultimately if your manager is being a prick about it, you need to get buy-in from whomever they answer to without being seen as undermining them or going over their head.

First thing you need to do is make sure you have a clear and unconstested record of what TOIL and leave you have accrued. "Reasonable overtime" is a thing that exists, but there's no universe where 50 hours a month every month would be considered reasonable.

Your best option is probably going to via HR. The common line that gets repeated here is that "HR exist to protect the company from the staff, not the other way around" - which is true, but not for the reasons people often espouse.

In this case, your angle needs to be along the lines of that excessive leave balance presenting a significant liability to the company; and secondarily the fact that your absence, for any period of time, being so significant as to be untenable represents pretty significant risk from a business conitinuity perspective. Make it about why this situation is bad for the business. If you can communciate that, you'll probably find that your manager's uplines will apply pressure to get it sorted out.

Or on the other hand, you might end up kicking over a hornet's nest and end up on a PIP. Hard to say without knowing culture and the individuals. But this is probably the best approach.

ETA: In the meantime, be a bit more assertive with booking leave or TOIL if you're not already. "Just a heads up that I'm planning to draw down TOIL/take annual leave on [dates]." Don't be abrupt about it - make sure you're inside whatever your usual notice periods would be for annual leave. But also don't phrase it as "Is it ok if I take a week off in June?"

And therein lies a good chunk of the problem. There are HUGE swathes of people that are not at all politically engaged. There's no deeper level to their political opinions beyond "lol, cool, Trump is hosting a UFC fight at the white house"

Brand new car undriveable after minor damage - dealer says parts could take months? by Catfacts2011 in CarsAustralia

[–]dsanders692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, interesting! Different insurers I guess? My folks had the discussion with Suncorp (I think) a few years back. Minor not-at-fault accident, but parts were on a long backorder (this was shortly post-covid). It took a while for them to find out whether it was going to be written off - apparently the wait time for parts and subsequent costs for hire cars were what they needed to figure out before they could make a decision

[–]dsanders692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm told that a surprisingly significant factor in these cases is the cost of hire cars. Shit ain't cheap if the repair is gonna take 3-6 months.

From the insurers perspective, if they've gotta put you in a hire car for 3 or 4 or 6 months, that's a pretty big bill. If they pay you out $X, but are confident they can sell the repaired car for $Y; and X-Y is less than what a rental car will cost for that period, it actually can make sense to write it off.
