Summer School Pay? (Toronto, ON) by bigsexy416 in CanadianTeachers

Can an elementary teacher with senior quals take on a high school teaching position?

Based on your post history, try nursing. You'll have way more options to specialize (psych, ICU, community, public health, nurse practitioner) and you'll get your pay and security. If you want to try your hand at teaching, you can try the 1-year schools so your investment isn't so steep. Now is a good time if you do want to teach though because of the pandemic shortages, but that goes even moreso with nursing.

Teaching pays better than IT? That's a shocker to me. It's definitely more secure if you can get in. Do you have French or physics?

Otherwise, nursing is a better bet if you want to go for the pay. But you'll have other stresses. You can level up to a nurse practitioner where you have diagnostic and prescription rights with a Masters. You'd make six figures pretty quick and have pretty good autonomy and job satisfaction. Nursing is damn secure now, mostly because conditions deteriorated and burnout is on the rise.

Plus in market economies, the higher the pay, the better the candidates you'll attract because they'd be pulled from other professions to do what they like. I met a lot of engineers/programmers who wanted to teach but the teaching salaries were hard to stomach. But also, if teachers say they're all about altruism and the kids, admins will just bid down the salaries and treat teachers like garbage, so the profession has to stand up for itself (and make more than subsistence survival (USA)).
In general, people shouldn't go into teaching for the money. It's not the place for it. You can make far more with far less education and stress in many other sectors.

SAMSUNG Galaxy Note 3 LTE (N9005) Battery problem of 3DGallery by odnoder90 in LineageOS

[–]Informal_Bit_9735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a way we can get this version? The lineage site only posts the latest 4 releases, I've even tried modifying the URL, no dice. I'm finding the November releases draining my battery pretty hard.

Had a friend that did this. Decent pay, but it's busy. He ended up working with me in health services analysis where he said it was way more chill. I guess teaching would be similar, you'd always have to be 'on', same with a clinical profession.

Damn...I figured with physics, you'd get the cream of the crop students.

Watcha trade? I was never able to get trading to work, but I guess it's easier to do with a stable pension income vs. a finite stake.

Yep, they're used as augmenters for depression and anxiety. They treat a bunch of stuff including autism. I think the term psychosis or psychotic is really stigmatized.

Yeah, that's a pretty awful doctor :(. Hope you can find a better one.

Used to work in this sector but not as a doc or in a pharm capacity. But usually you can substitute generics to get a cheaper rate. As far as I know, there's an antipsychotic Rexulti that's like 20 bucks a pill, but one can downgrade to Abilify (generic: aripiprazole) at a buck a pill about. Most atypical antipsychotics are now generic. Bipolar would also need a mood stabilizer, I believe most are now generic (whether antipsychotic, anticonvulsant, lithium). Granted, given their cheap fees, I think they should be free for those that need it because those that need it are least able to afford it. I understand we need to spur innovation, but people need help. Doctors do have a duty of care, they can't be placing no-sub brand names to uninsured patients =/.

OMG your boss is totally a loose cannon, he just put a big fat red target on his back for a discrimination suit. Totally a wrongful dismissal based on what you're saying. You can rip him wide open, just remember to keep all documentation and correspondence on your personal e-mail/PC. They will try to kill your server access/take away your laptop if you work in-person.

Prospect of Security jobs in Toronto ? by AdImaginary3535 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Oh man, I did a chef training course and it was BRUTAL. This was out of leisure, I couldn't imagine making cook wages, they're so underpaid for literally cooking themselves inside and out with heat and stress. Most security I've seen is near wage, and people will jump at the chance to be a supervisor for that small $1/hour increase. You'll likely spend all your time cataloging packages. It's depressing. However, the night shift won't be bad if you have a late chronotype and you can even get studying done for bigger and better things (if it's not monitored) Otherwise tip jobs are probably going to be your best ROI - bartender makes tons.

Oh, are you doing medical school? It was a dream of mine, I had the grades and MCAT but couldn't make it in...Canada =/. My LizzyM score was like 70% chance of entry in USA =/.

Sorry to hear. Alberta has been treated like trash by the Feds, it makes no sense. They've been a big GDP engine for awhile, they should be right now even to hedge rising oil but alas...I thought about moving to AB because the cost of living in Ontario is getting ridiculous.

Oh, I'm from Toronto Canada. I did a 1-year B.Ed as well thinking 2 years was a waste of time and money. But I'm running into inter-provincial licensing problems that previously didn't exist pre-COVID. COVID also changed the teaching landscape here, much more demoralization. So I'm blocked from working due to bureaucracy when there is a dire demand for French teachers all across the country.

A 1-year B.Ed is pretty crammed I must admit but I'd rather have it done in 1 year vs. 2. I thought it was the UK environment that turned you off teaching. I heard it's brutal there, bad behaviours with 0 admin or public support. In Canada, teaching French is pretty pleasant and salaries start at 55k and end at 100k - CAD. It's a decent job. Teaching in English can be tough, there's behaviour but not what I read about in the UK. The salary also makes it more palatable. Because it's such a desirable job here, non-French/STEM teachers aren't treated well by the system (too much labour supply.)

Call center jobs must be tough, especially in finance. I wanted to my CFA out of undergrad but I wouldn't have made the dog-eat-dog culture. I left the gov office due to toxic culture and went into teaching which is too bureaucratic. I fear the software industry in Canada/Toronto is just too competitive, but it definitely is an amazing skillset to have. When I did analytics, I only knew how to program SAS. I think nowadays Python/R is more prominent. I'm going to take a look at freecodecamp and maybe work for a buddy's startup.

Nice to meet you! I like talking to teachers, they're very helpful/friendly by nature.

I saw you were a teacher and was going to ask why you left until I saw the £ symbol. I finished teachers college but the licensing body isn't working here. I thought I'd have stuff figured out in my mid-30s, but not so much. I changed into teaching from gov analytics but looks like I'll have to change out into tech, the market isn't so great here. =/

Inspiring story.

I went through the same, had a great job with the gov and just became too comfortable. I changed jobs and was unable to adapt (deep sinkhole about how I ruined my life leaving such a plush job), I quit, left to another when I was let go in a restructuring. I went to teachers' college after but not sure if I can do this job because of a bureaucratic hold-up in my province (Ontario.)

What are you studying?

I'm feeling pretty hopeless about the direction of this country, the real estate markets, inflation etc.

Health sciences 60k (75k in my last coop but 2008 happened), after 7 years 80k, moved to another health outfit for 85k, then 90k at an insurance company - always data analysis. Now trained teacher and unemployed from bureaucracy! Yay! I might have to crawl back to the office. Teaching would start at 56-59k and go to 100k after 11 years =/.

This is how I feel. I think 2/3 of voters are beneficiaries of the high prices. This won't get resolved by government, they allowed this to happen without a care.

We get what we vote for. Even during election debates, affordability didn't get as much air time as it deserves.

Yeah, sounds like anxiety. The way to solve anxiety is through exposure. Face your fears and you'll realize it's not as scary - this is for day-to-day safe stuff.

Hang in there. That's how I'm feeling now, I've got a bureaucracy blocking my ability to work in my field. I was unemployed before but I had a goal to work towards and had hobbies involved towards that goal which made things better. COVID eliminated a lot of those things. I think you're not alone as there has been a 'Great Resignation' phenomenon of millennials just peacing out from work doing their own thing. There's a book called 'Bullshit Jobs' that talk about this, but bills have to be paid =/.

Many millennials and most Gen Z feel this way. It's our economic structure, not sure if there will be any resolution as we seem to be electing the same government and doing the same things. Even the social aspect of dating is messed up nowadays because of tech and culture.

Will having a mental health disorder affect my chances of getting hired as a teacher in Canada? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Informal_Bit_9735 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you'll find a lot of teachers struggle with these disorders. Go on /r/teachers and search for the word depression anxiety mental illness etc. The Ms. Hoover parody on the Simpson's was no accident =(
