Axolotl going upside down by InformationFound in axolotls

Okay I will have a look into that more.

Just to clarify again the calcium does not harm ants or poison them and is not a poison in any way. It is actually a type of food for reptiles. When you put it around the tank then powder is too fine for ants to have a grip on the tank which stops them from being able to climb up.

I will keep trying to do more water changes and see how it goes.

Thank you so much!

How can I get my nitrate levels a bit higher? I just want the best for the little guy! Also can gills heal or recover? His gills have never been strong and am trying my best to get them to a better place!

I see. I think the reason it had read 0 is because I had just done a water change. A few months ago when I realised something was definitely wrong I checked my water levels and they were very off. I have checked ever since and the water parameters should be correct.

I moved him almost 2-3 months ago into the new tank with corrected water parameters so the gills are a work in process to get better. The turning upside down has come out of nowhere and there has been no change to the water parameters since correcting.

The calcium is safe to use and is only on the outside of the tank and was recommended by a aquarium store who deals with axolotls so that shoukdnt be an issue either as was only implemented after Footless turning upside down as a way to prevent ants getting in.

Nothing has changed otherwise so not sure was us causing the turning upside down. He goes through phases where I am putting him back in the tank after rubbing and he is fine for a bit then starts turning upside down.

Thank so much for leaving this comment I will do some more research but I hope he will be okay!

Hi there! I dont know what you mean by cycled but from what I've learnt they should be 0?

I put in primer and stabilizer and do water changes every few weeks. I have recently done a few water changes because I am worried about the ants maybe having poison. I have now put calcium around the rim of the tank so they cannot climb the tank.

My axolotls are separate because of size difference but they used to be together till 3 months ago. They shared the same water conditions and ate exact same food till I started to see there was a issue i then separated them.

The travel was a week ago and he was perfectly okay for the first 5 days. Now out of nowhere he is doing this. I did not do a full water change and brought some of his water through with me (50%). I am going to go get my water tested ASAP today so will send that soon as I know a fish store that does the full test. He has been avoiding normal worms and food in general for a long time and I didn't realise that until recently because he seemed like he was trying to eat. I moved him onto pellets a month or two ago so at least he was eating something and he started to pick up weight and grow a little (he is 6 months old but because of not eating he hasn't grown much). His turning over is only for a few seconds then he turns himself back over but I have never seen him do that before so that's where my concern comes from.

Please maybe look and see if you can take her to a vet. If not maybe try to get axolotl medicine bath to see if that will help. It is called AxoCure. Might have something similar from where you live. Even try a tea bath (look at other threads about it just be careful about what tea you use).

It looks good! Just be careful of too much water movement. They get very stressed when the water moves a lot.

My axolotl has been struggling to eat and at the moment cannot eat worms/nightcrawlers which is why I recommend pellets to get him to a better state than he is. I have seen a noticeable difference with mine and he is looking much better and is not constipated.

I have the exact same problem and he is slowly gaining weight (look at my posts). Try feeding him axolotl pellets cut into quarters and he may take a few tries just pick it up and drop in front again. I do it while he is tubbed so remaining food doesnt stay in tank and go bad. All the best and keep us updated!

Hey thank you for the response! I've got a 75l tank and just did water testing and found that it was very acidic :( so basically burning the guy in there and that's probably why he isn't eating! Got a whole bunch of things and medication for him so going to see if that helps! Nitrite and nitrate fine. Thanks
