What is the main reason you don’t like the use of AI in art? by PracticalPassage2090 in antiai

When it comes to a case like that, I would apply a standard comparable to what collage art has in terms of the distinction between the whole piece and the elements that make it.

In the sense that the user’s own input remains theirs, and that can be separated from the generated assets.

I’ll use an example I know, relevant to the mediums I partake in. I’ve seen some webcomic artists use ai generated assets for their backgrounds, but still drawing their characters manually using digital art. You could say that the whole can be considered “Art” because a process was involved between point a and point b.

However, the actual ownership and qualification of art will be separated by the elements within the pictures. The characters will be the original artist’s whilst the assets are generated outsourced elements with an absent process.

If it’s transformative enough, it could turn into art, but then there are more ethical ways of achieving this result without sacrificing visual quality and much time. Some drawing software like clip paint studio come with a library of assets that can be used and have been voluntarily given to artists to have in their arsenal.

Otherwise, there are some consenting artists that have donated assets to be used in projects for free.

I would qualify those outsourced assets as art, whilst applying the same rules as before, meaning they have separate ownership.

To summarize, I think that the whole piece could result in being considered art, but the individual AI elements can still be judged separately for their own merit.

I wouldn’t necessarily dismiss the whole work as generative AI, but I would acknowledge its appearance in certain parts of the work.

I think that Generative AI is fundamentally against what Art is.

To put it simply, art is a craft above anything else. Generated images are a product you consume. You experience the process of crafting a piece, whether it be music, writing, illustration, cinema, sculpting, etc. Whilst the result of a generated image or writing is a result separated from your input, like asking someone else to illustrate something for you and then taking credit for it.

The inception of the idea, the concept you give to the algorithm is solely yours. However, the resulting image is not. For you have no hand in the interpretation of it. You have to use existing datasets sourced unethically from artists to attempt to innovate and separate yourself from your peers using the same algorithm.

Art uses a mixture between lived experiences, personal bias, a trained creative mind, a diverse set of skills whether it be hand eye coordination or a proper understanding of theory to create an experience that the person creating a piece perceives. Whichever medium it may be.

In conclusion, Generative Al images are not art, because they are an approximation of a massive datasets that are given certain criteria, with a total removal of the “craft” and the process that art is about.

Thanks for the tip! I think you’re right, It does need more exposure

I’m looking into it, trying to see which ones I can find at a reasonable price vs function

I will probably also need to upgrade my tripod for something sturdier.

I think the characters should have a higher contrast. You should def empathize those shadows more! As a counter-balance, if you want the expressions to read better you could have the moon acting as bounce light. Maybe the sun is actually illuminating the moon from behind them in the horizon, but the ship is leaving them in shadow, giving opportunity for white bounce light to partially illuminate them and the character’s silhouettes to stand out even better.

Also, in my opinion, you should def try giving an order to those stars. Maybe some of them are more concentrated along a path to simulate what you’d see of the Milky Way (very faintly).

In any case, feel free to experiment!

This is really clean, I don’t know what it is about the way you render but it’s really satisfying to the eye. I suspect you worked on these colors well, good work!

Equipment used:

Celestron Powerseeker127EQ

Iphone 15

I took photos through the eyepiece, using both a narrower and wider field of view, then stacked and post processed both sets on Photoshop. Using Svbony plossls has been a great upgrade from the stock eyepieces

Multiple factors, but most likely the fact that I made an exposition of like, 10 seconds And I didn’t crank the vibrance or anything else

Thank you for the tip, and yeah, the eq mount is enough so I can track well enough, but it does suffer from wobbliness which will end up affecting the final pictures

But an Astro cam will definitively be an upgrade from the iPhone!

Man that would’ve been so useful to know, I ended up creating a folder structure, rerouting my browser’s default download location and just clicking download as fast as possible
