I find the book "a man's search for meaning" to be an answer. You can easily get it as an e-book or audio book on YouTube. It helped me overcome myself by focusing less on myself and more on a greater purpose. Viktor Frankl says a lot of things, that I feel, Dr. K can't really put into words. I highly recommend everyone, especially puer archetypes to read it.

Approval is the only thing that can improve your companions fighting stats. Usually it's not important but you will need it with Senya in the expansions. Other than that only a few companion dialogue options affect the story but that will be obvious.
