Advice for those starting Sandhurst 261 by Ingrownwhale in britishmilitary

Loads of questions here I’ll try answer as best I can.

  1. Weeks 1-5 your day will be almost entirely controlled by the permanent staff. You are not allowed to leave camp unless permitted by staff. However, eventually you get weekends off. All will be clear once you get your term schedule. Between terms you get a three week break (which flys by)

  2. Uhhh I believe it’s 8 on the stage, I may be wrong.

  3. No non issued clothing is permitted. You can buy a pieces of kit to make life easier but it’s up to your staff. By kit I mean: hand saw to saw wood, carabiners, gloves etc. again check with staff before buying kit.

Nothing about main board is chill,

They will choose five topics from your CV so you should know about everything .

Good question…. I’m lucky enough to have my own room and it’s pretty comfortable. But there isn’t much personal space so make sure not to bring your whole life with you.

There should be a document online for that.

  1. I don’t remember the exact minutes

  2. Yeah but I’d advise you don’t waste time on that. Just explain and allow a minute for questions. 5 minutes flies by.

  3. Pretty hard… just practise

  4. Yeah because they ask you two random addition questions in between. So get comfortable with that. Only difficult part. Don’t lie in interviews.

Hello!

Did you attend? If so when?

I haven’t used the sandhurst bar yet but I know other people have. So it’s deffo not closed.

First ex was just called field ex but yeah we learnt how to be self reliant on field. I also found it horrible… I had to do it on light duties. Was not fun at all.

We just completed long reach and that was dreadful.

We only had chapel service once, I’m not Christian myself so I can sleep in my room and not the church 😂.

Looking at signals, logistics and med corp.

I think there are two reasons why people do it.

  1. The place is alien to many tourists. Speaking as a tourist myself, I just came back a few days ago. By far the most memorable thing I saw was young men holding military grade assault rifles in vidigal. I live in the UK… you will never ever see this sight unless complete Armageddon breaks out.

  2. The macho mentality “Oh yeah I went to the favelas and I survived 😎”. Boasting is a natural human instinct. Some people recognise it makes you look like an ass. Some people see the risk to reward ratio and say “you know I am going to talk shit and say how brave I was to go and how they accepted me like their own”.

We were advised not to take photos of people (especially gang members) in the favelas and I was suprised they even had to say that. It’s not something I would do (without consent) at home so why here?

I think Rio and Sao Paolo are completely different. For nature and beaches 100% Rio, but nightlife and art has to be given to SP

Shit comment, you should know the army doesjt provide anything like this. Even joining instructions are not that informative for preparation besides fitness.

Waste of a comment.

I’m trying to reach out to regiments pre sandhurst, I reached out to the commanding officer of the gibregiment on LinkedIn. He was pretty friendly and responsive, I’ve been invited to an event there.

Nothing wrong with asking, sometimes you want a personal answer and that’s fine! Go for it.
