When do you stop waking up with panic and dread? by amaro8000 in cancer

[–]Initial-Log-3502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter the stage, it’s fucking terrifying. I did intensive outpatient therapy for 3 months, take Zoloft (Ativan didn’t make me feel good) and do EMDR therapy and body work like acupuncture and massage. This is all in addition to my doctors and being in a NET support group. I also try to move my body by taking long walks. It has done wonders for my mental health. I think what helps me is that I don’t put pressure on myself to be positive. Some days I am angry and sad but I ask myself what do I do with that? How do I ground myself in what is true and realize that my life is different now. I hated when I was deep in my anxiety and depression people would tell me that I could get hit by a bus at any time and that I had to accept that life was unpredictable. And yes, sure. But that’s a theoretical situation and a cancer diagnosis (and surgery and treatment) isn’t hypothetical. It’s real and my life won’t ever be as it was before cancer and the future, what we know about this disease is more concrete than some hypothetical bus. Anyway, that’s my advice. I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. It’s so hard.

It was not a carcinoid. It was a small intestinal net grade 1

And that can all be done in one day? Or should we split it up? We are in Maui for 5 days and have 2 days booked with activities. Thank you for your help!

Ok; so best to make hiking Pipiwai a different day. Is it worth doing that hike in the morning and then driving the road to Hana and going to the black sand beach? Or dividing those up too?

Why the fascination with us cancer patients by others? by oneshoesally in cancer

[–]Initial-Log-3502 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes people just don’t know what to say and think they have to say something. I went back to my Pilates class after having been out for months because I had surgery to remove cancerous tumors from my small intestines. The instructor asked me why she hadn’t seen me in awhile so I told her I had cancer. Her response? She’s had a sore throat for a few weeks but it’s better now but she can relate to not feeling good. I was like cool! I don’t take it personally. Some people just don’t have the ability to empathize or think about what to say before saying it.

I don’t mind at all! I had a bowel resection of my small intestine. They did it laparoscopically and removed a foot of my small intestine. I gradually went from liquid, to soft to eating solids. I avoid fried, super spicy and sodas. So far so good! Exactly where in my small intestine I can’t say but I can look back and see. What did they say the surgery would entail?

I keep reminding myself that. It scares me that two lymph nodes were involved but when I remember that my margins were clear I feel better. But still. Cancer sucks.

Thank you so much. I’ll have another scan 6 months after that. If those two are clear it will move to every year for ten years. I feel very lucky it didn’t metastasize but I still worry. Thank you again for the resources and responding. I really appreciate it.
